      We are seeking an innovative and engaged Senior PHP developer who is motivated, creative, and fun to assist in developing our custom CakePHP and Laravel web applications.

      • Full-Time, 8a-5p in your time zone

      • Minor and major application feature development

      • 7+ years experience with PHP, Modern Backend Framework (CakePHP, Laravel, Symfony, etc.), Modern Front End Framework (Vue, jQuery, Angular, etc.), HTML5, SASS & CSS
      • A communication pro - must be able to explain technical issues to a non-technical person, pleasantly (we are always on Slack with stakeholders)
      • Comfortable with writing, editing, and maintaining Unit/Feature tests
      • Highly attentive to details, able to cross all the t's and dot all the i's and help review/fix others
      • There is direct project oversight, but you are expected to take ownership of your work and your projects, establish deadlines, and communicate progress proactively
      • Eager to research and learn in a self-directed way (always improving)

    • Summary

      The Scoring Platform team builds and maintains machine learning technologies to empower millions of users – readers, contributors, and donors – who contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects on a daily basis.  We address process inefficiencies with machine learning technologies, we design and test new technology, we produce empirical insights, and we publish and present research on the intersection of technology and culture. We are strongly committed to principles of transparency, privacy and collaboration.  We use free and open source technology and we collaborate with researchers in the industry and academia. 

      As a Software Engineer of the Scoring Platform team, you will help us build and scale our machine prediction service, train new machine learning models, and implement other data-intensive applications. You’ll travel to conferences to interact with researchers and volunteer contributors to Wikimedia Projects. You’ll help translate abstractions from current research and volunteers’ needs into concrete technologies and we’ll learn about the impacts of those technologies together.

      You are responsible for:

      • Implementing the Scoring Platform’s data intensive infrastructure and APIs
      • Collaborating with researchers and product managers to bring forward foundational technologies for new products
      • Coordinating and communicating with other members of the Wikimedia engineering teams on relevant projects

        Work Environment

        This is a remote role working as a part of a global, distributed team spanning 5 continents. Most of your work will be asynchronous, with communication via Slack, JIRA, and Github, with a few video meetings per week. Most Client teams are located in North America, so expect some of your work time to overlap with North American working hours. Our project teams may include a Lead Engineer/Architect, UX Architect, Product Owner, Project Manager, Quality Analyst, and 1-4 additional Engineers. Engineers typically work on 1-2 projects at a time.

            We’re a remote-first engineering team of 25 people distributed in 14 different countries. A priority for us is maintaining proper work-life balance. A day in our working lives is pretty boring in this regard, and we feel that’s exactly how it should be.

Twice a year we fly the whole engineering team together to a different location in Europe, and at least once a year we join up with the rest of the company so we can spend some time together with the other departments.

            What does working at Silverfin look like?

            We work in nimble teams around 5 people in size, with each team taking ownership of a specific set of features of the application. Teams are responsible for a full slice across the stack, so both the backend as well as the frontend of each part is maintained by the same people.

            You’ll be supported by our UI designer who develops and maintains HTML and CSS components into a reusable UI-framework, and even builds Vue.js prototypes where necessary, handling compatibility problems with different browsers for you, and making sure everything is responsive as well.

            Our ops team ensures things run smoothly, deploys happen correctly, and will work with you when issues should arise. We’re enthusiastic followers of the devops mindset, which means ops and developers work together to solve problems, and empower each-other to be self-sufficient, instead of throwing problems over the wall to the “other side”.

            Our stack is Vue.js and vanilla JS with a sprinkling of jQuery on the frontend and an up-to-date Rails monolith on the backend. We use PostgreSQL and Redis for persistence and caching, and everything is running on a Kubernetes cluster in Google Cloud. Our daily tools include GitLab, Quip and Slack, with Zoom as our remote conferencing tool of choice.

            No code gets deployed without a code-review by a peer and testing is a must. Our pipeline automates deployment when the suite is green, and deploys happen dozens of times a day. Each team is currently doing Kanban, but they’re free to follow whatever process suits them best. There are regular retros held to work towards continuous improvement.

            Software for accountants is not considered to be very exciting, but we have our fair share of technical challenges. To give you a sense of scale: our database exceeds 7TB*, and our largest table recently crossed the 10 billion row mark. We interface with more than 30 different external APIs, and provide third parties an API of our own.

            *: Our ops team noted that this actually isn’t that hard to achieve if you’re just indexing everything, but it still sounds impressive, right?

            As a Front End A/B Test Engineer, you’ll work closely with strategic directors, account managers, designers and QA to build tests the team has prioritized for our clients.             About this position

            The ideal candidate will be the glue and bridge-the-gap between Knucklepuck’s clients and the web development team.  In this role, you will ensure that client deliverables are being met on time, with precision, and that the Knucklepuck team has a well-defined pathway to meet the client’s expectations.  You understand the nuts and bolts of WordPress and utilize your skill set to create detailed, easy to read & follow technical documentation.

            To succeed in this role you must have:

            • At least 3 years experience in a similar website product/project management role, particularly at an agency specializing in custom WordPress development 

            • Deep understanding of WordPress (custom post types, taxonomies, posts, pages, widgets, navigation, users, etc.) 

            • Experience with design and front-end principles and tools (knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript a plus) 

            • Understanding of API’s and integration between WordPress and third-party platforms. 

            • Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment where strategies or priorities can quickly shift as business needs warrant. 

            • Must be exceptionally organized, highly detail-oriented and have strong communication skills.

            Your primary responsibilities will include:

            • Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous web development projects and keep them on time and on budget. 

            • Proven ability to participate in discovery meetings to assess website requirements 

            • Proven ability to break down and document tasks for templates/functionality, including the design, front-end development, and backend development phases. 

            • Coordinate with team members on scheduling using our PM software (Wrike) 

            • Serve as the primary liaison between the web development team and the client 

            • Coordinate recurring status meetings with stakeholders

            • Conduct Quality Assurance testing of development phases, comparing with documented requirements to ensure accurate implementation against those requirements.

            • Write clear, concise, and human documentation for external developer audience.
            • Work cross functionally with Design, Development, Content, Product, Marketing, QA and other teams
            • Develop programming samples and tutorials to accelerate developers onboarding
            • Extract domain and technical details by closely collaborating with Product Managers, Engineering Leads and SMEs to create new developer experience for customers

            Qualifications - Mandatory:

            • You are a fast, prolific writer who can generate relevant content for the web and keep up with scope and speed
            • You obsess to deliver customers intuitive, effective, delightful and human experience
            • Passion to thrive in a fast-paced, fluid environment and drive change
            • Proficient in REST, YAML, JSON, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, HTTP, and XML
            • Experience working with git and GitHub
            • Experience writing all common forms of developer documentation (API reference, quick starter guides, conceptual guides, and tutorials)
            • Experience writing code examples in pseudocode and Java
            • Experience creating technical design and architectural guides, with visual diagrams, data flows and illustrations
            • Comfortable navigating and reading source code in a variety of languages
            • Familiarity with developing software for cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service products
