    • Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.

The Wikimedia Foundation is hiring two Site Reliability Engineers to support and maintain (1) the data and statistics infrastructure that powers a big part of decision making in the Foundation and in the Wiki community, and (2) the search infrastructure that underpins all search on Wikipedia and its sister projects. This includes everything from eliminating boring things from your daily workflow by automating them, to upgrading a multi-petabyte Hadoop or multi-terabyte Search cluster to the next upstream version without impacting uptime and users.

We're looking for an experienced candidate who's excited about working with big data systems. Ideally you will already have some experience working with software like Hadoop, Kafka, ElasticSearch, Spark and other members of the distributed computing world. Since you'll be joining an existing team of SREs you'll have plenty of space and opportunities to get familiar with our tech (Analytics, Search, WDQS), so there's no need to immediately have the answer to every question.

We are a full-time distributed team with no one working out of the actual Wikimedia office, so we are all together in the same remote boat. Part of the team is in Europe and part in the United States. We see each other in person two or three times a year, either during one of our off-sites (most recently in Europe), the Wikimedia All Hands (once a year), or Wikimania, the annual international conference for the Wiki community.

Here are some examples of projects we've been tackling lately that you might be involved with:

      •  Integrating an open-source GPU software platform like AMD ROCm in Hadoop and in the Tensorflow-related ecosystem
      •  Improving the security of our data by adding Kerberos authentication to the analytics Hadoop cluster and its satellite systems
      •  Scaling the Wikidata query service, a semantic query endpoint for graph databases
      •  Building the Foundation's new event data platform infrastructure
      •  Implementing alarms that alert the team of possible data loss or data corruption
      •  Building a new and improved Jupyter notebooks ecosystem for the Foundation and the community to use
      •  Building and deploying services in Kubernetes with Helm
      •  Upgrading the cluster to Hadoop 3
      •  Replacing Oozie by Airflow as a workflow scheduler

And these are our more formal requirements:

      •    Couple years experience in an SRE/Operations/DevOps role as part of a team
      •    Experience in supporting complex web applications running highly available and high traffic infrastructure based on Linux
      •    Comfortable with configuration management and orchestration tools (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, SaltStack, etc.), and modern observability infrastructure (monitoring, metrics and logging)
      •    An appetite for the automation and streamlining of tasks
      •    Willingness to work with JVM-based systems
      •    Comfortable with shell and scripting languages used in an SRE/Operations engineering context (e.g. Python, Go, Bash, Ruby, etc.)
      •    Good understanding of Linux/Unix fundamentals and debugging skills
      •    Strong English language skills and ability to work independently, as an effective part of a globally distributed team
      •    B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, related field or equivalent in related work experience. Do not feel you need a degree to apply; we value hands-on experience most of all.

      The Wikimedia Foundation is...

...the nonprofit organization that hosts and operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge, free of interference. We host the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive financial support from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

The Wikimedia Foundation is an equal opportunity employer, and we encourage people with a diverse range of backgrounds to apply.

    • The Challenge

We’re now looking for a Data Engineer or a Senior Backend Software Engineer (sometimes called Data Infrastructure Engineer, Data Platform Engineer, or Machine Learning Platform Engineer) who can lead the charge in developing and maintaining the platform that will support large-scale ML deployments. Imagine that you have cutting-edge machine learning models, but you now have to deploy them behind a bank’s four walls on a system that could be used by over 30,000 companies simultaneously in a database with billions of records. You must have 3+ years of production-level experience working with Kubernetes.

      Overview

Our mission is to build financial management technologies that enable the world’s most important companies to grow more quickly in a sustainable way that’s good for people, the planet, and business.

When companies have strong cash flow performance they can shift from short-term acrobatics to long-term growth and innovation. These are the teams that change the world by being freed to optimize for all of their stakeholders, including their employees, business partners, and environment.

      The Opportunity

Cash flow is the toughest financial statement to understand but it’s fundamental to funding your own growth. We build the most intuitive and actionable tools for companies to optimize cash flow performance. Our platform analyzes billions of dollars of B2B transactions each year, users spend 70% of their workday in Tesorio, and we save finance teams thousands of hours. As a result, they can invest more confidently and anticipate their capital needs further in advance.

We’re growing quickly and working with the world’s best companies and the largest bank in the US. We recently raised a $10MM Series A led by Madrona Venture Group and are backed by top investors including First Round Capital, Y Combinator, and Floodgate. We’re also backed by tenured finance execs, including the former CFOs of Oracle and NetSuite.

We’re now looking for a Data Engineer or Senior Backend Software Engineer who can lead the charge in developing and maintaining the platform that will support large-scale ML deployments. This project you are joining is fast-paced and for a large bank, so you must be experienced—you will not have time to simultaneously onboard, gather business context, and deliver on the tight timeline. To give you a sense for the project, imagine that you have cutting-edge machine learning models, but you now have to deploy them behind a bank’s four walls on a system that could be used by over 30,000 companies simultaneously in a database with billions of records.

The ideal candidate for this role is NOT someone that can build a great model, rather you are good at building and maintaining a complex piece of infrastructure on Kubernetes and understand its common pitfalls. You should be strong at Python and SQL, a good communicator, and should be extremely reliable, able to own deliverables without dropping the ball. You must have 6+ years of experience as an engineer with 3+ years of production-level experience working with Kubernetes.

Our team is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we have a diverse, distributed workforce in five countries across the Americas. We don’t believe that people need to sacrifice being close to their families and where they’d prefer to live in order to do their best work.

      Responsibilities
      • You will be responsible for creating and maintaining machine learning infrastructure on Kubernetes
      • Build and own workflow management systems like Airflow, Kubeflow, or Argo. Advise data and ML engineers on how to package and deploy their workflows
      • Implement logging, metrics and monitoring services for your infrastructure and container logs
      • Create Helm charts for versioned deployments of the system on client premises
      • Continuously strive to abstract away infrastructure, high availability, identity and access management concerns from Machine Learning and Software Engineers
      • Understand the product requirements and bring your own opinions and document best practices for leveraging Kubernetes
      Skills
      • 6+ years of experience in creating and maintaining data and machine learning platforms in production
      • Expert-level knowledge of Kubernetes like various operators, deployments, cert management, security, binding users with cluster and IAM roles, etc.
      • Experience dealing with persistence pitfalls on Kubernetes, creating and owning workflow management system (Airflow, Kubeflow, Argo etc.,) on Kubernetes
      • Experience creating Helm charts for versioned deployments on client premises
      • Experience securing the system with proper identity and access management for people and applications.
      • Ability to work in a fast paced, always-changing environment
      • Nice to have: Experience spinning up infrastructure using Terraform and Ansible
      • Nice to have: Experience working with data engineers running workflow management tools on your infrastructure

We're aware the confidence gap exists so we want to encourage you to apply even if you do not match all of the requirements exactly. The above list is intended to show the kinds of experience and qualities we're looking for. It is not a complete list of pre-required skills.

The culture here at GitLab is something we’re incredibly proud of. Because GitLabbers are currently located in over 51 different countries, you’ll spend your time collaborating with kind, talented, and motivated colleagues from across the globe.

Some of the benefits you’ll be entitled to vary by the region or country you’re in. However, all GitLabbers are fully remote and receive a "no ask, must tell" paid-time-off policy, where we don’t count the number of days you take off annually. You can work incredibly flexible hours, enabled by our asynchronous approach to communication. We’ll also help you set up your home office environment, pay for your membership to a co-working space and contribute to the travel costs associated with meeting other GitLab team members across the world. Also, every year or so, we’ll invite you to our Contribute event.

          Hiring Process and compensation:

Our hiring process for this Software Engineer in Test position typically follows six stages. The details of this process and the compensation for this role can be found at the bottom of our job family page.
