We're a small distributed team that knows firsthand the sales tax challenges we’re working to solve. We're lean and experienced. We've started our own businesses, sold successful companies (a few in the tax and accounting spaces), been part of IPOs, worked at Fortune 500’s and even resold hundreds of designer shoes on eBay from a garage. We get it. Sales tax isn't fun and that's why we made TaxJar.

We all work remotely from wherever works best for each team member. For most of us, that's home. For others, that may be a local coffee shop or a boat. The only requirement is that we're working from a place with WiFi, and we're able to get our work done. We talk as needed on Basecamp and each of our teams has separate channels to discuss what's necessary.

    We want you to join one of our product engineering teams and help us build a product our customers love. The product engineering team at TaxJar is solving complex problems on a daily basis, supporting our growing customer base and creating new solutions in a complex domain. We deal with large datasets, complex frequently-changing sales tax rules, and automating complex processes for thousands of business customers.

    As a QA Automation Engineer at TaxJar you will:

    • Work with the Engineering team in developing a QA testing strategy for projects

    • Determining the appropriate balance of manual and automated tests, as well as the types of tests (UI, API, functional/performance/load, and so on)

    • Build end-to-end smoke tests

    • Create processes to validate data quality

    • Improve and build upon our test suite, test guidelines, and testing culture

    • Execute and report on the full test suite of our applications

    • Review and test your teammates pull requests

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 3+ years of Software Testing & Engineer experience

    • Advanced problem-solving, debugging and troubleshooting skills

    • Proven and demonstrable skill building end-to-end smoke tests

    • Experience working both Ruby and JavaScript test frameworks

    • A strong understanding of Ruby on Rails and RSpec

    We're looking for a detailed oriented, battle-tested, and knowledgeable DevOps engineer that is eager to make an impact on a game-changing product in eCommerce. Someone that has the passion to build the infrastructure for TaxJar's core services to maintain and exceed our traffic and reliability trajectory.

    As a DevOps professional for TaxJar you will

    • Help us maintain high standards for security, stability, and operational best practices

How do I grow as a professional at TaxJar?

We’re a happy team and we all really love what we do. We've created a space where high-achievers can succeed but are also safe to fail. We’re currently working on formal personal development plans, too! Lateral moves are also encouraged. For instance, supporting teammates who wish to go from Product to Engineering.

We meet regularly in individual team "stand-ups" for 15 minutes to go over our team's plan for the day. We also meet with our teams weekly to go over priorities, and every Friday we have a company-wide social/culture meeting to talk, give and receive company updates, and hold demos. We do all of this because we know we need to keep the team "together" while being distributed, and it's easy... We just click a button and we're chatting on video.

Applying process

TaxJar’s interview process

At TaxJar, we enter the hiring process for one reason: to acquire someone who will be better in that role than anyone else in the company.

We want employees who will not only excel at the job at hand, but who bring a skillset that will teach the rest of the team along the way. There are no egos here. We all want to be better, because we know it will make TaxJar better.

Please note that we’re currently only in a position to hire US-based employees. We'd love to expand internationally at some point, but we're not there yet.

Here's the interview flow at TaxJar:

🤝 Review - We review applications to screen for skills, experience and values. For some roles, we’ll email additional questions or ask candidates to perform an exercise related to the role

🤝 Additional questions - For some roles, if your initial application stands out, we’ll ask you some additional questions via email to help us narrow down our candidate pool 

🤝 Recruiter interview - A recruiter will meet with you via Zoom on video to speak to you about TaxJar, the role, your skills and experience and to answer any questions you may have

🤝 Technical exercise - For certain roles, such as customer support, filing or engineering positions, we’ll ask you to perform an exercise so that we may assess your skills. For engineering roles, this will involve a code test

🤝 Hiring manager/team interviews - Your potential team leader, and possibly other team members, will meet with you to learn more about you and to answer any questions specific to the team your applying to join

🤝 Cultural interview - You’ll meet with a member of our senior or executive leadership to talk about the culture at TaxJar and for them to learn about which values appeal to you the most

🤝 Mutual assessment - After a successful cultural interview, we make an offer for a 30 to 90 day mutual assessment. The length of the assessment is dependent upon the role for which you are trialing. Learn more in our “My First month at TaxJar” section!

For candidates who make it through our entire process, it takes approximately 4-6 weeks from the initial application to a mutual assessment offer. Please note that we receive 300-400 applications each week, so we’re diligent in our interview process so we can make sure your values align with those of TaxJar

We also request background checks and personal references for all candidates who are offered a mutual assessment, which can take 2-7 days to clear.

My first month at TaxJar 

Sometimes great intentions don’t guarantee great hires, neither does the traditional interviewing process. TaxJar has a mutual paid trial period - you can read up on it at this blog post.

No trial = no offer. No exceptions. We hope a candidate is able to spend somewhere 80-160 hours working with TaxJar during their trial. Also, If a candidate can only work a few hours per week with us, their trial might extend over weeks and months.

We treat candidates like employees. Candidates get the same level of access and transparency to our company and business as we do with the rest of the team. Without this, how’s a candidate supposed to figure out if they want to work with us?

We fully immerse candidates in the team. We go out of our way to make sure a candidate has the opportunity to really get to know individuals on the team, and the culture of our company.
