    • Our mission

The problem: In 2017, nearly 60% of adults in sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash.

How we're solving it: We're building financial services to work as they should: no account fees, instantly available and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always function, we're creating financial infrastructure that "just works." In fall 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments; we're now processing over 200k payments every month. Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent, starting with Senegal. That's where you come in...

How you'll help us achieve it

We’re looking for an experienced engineer who’s independent, excited about getting things done and ready to hit the ground running. You'll be responsible for building and improving the ways people pay with Wave. You'll own every step of the process—from understanding the problem, to shipping your solution for users, to helping the customer support team resolve problems.

Our to-do list changes constantly, but here are some recent projects:

      • Allowing people to pay their electricity bills with Wave, by integrating with Senelec, the national electrical utility.

      • Building an app for business owners to pay their employees' salaries using Wave.

      • Letting us safely lend smartphones to thousands of taxi drivers so they can accept payments with Wave, by building software to manage the phones and discourage theft.

      Key Details

      • You can work remotely from anywhere (between UTC -8 and +4) with reliable Internet access

      • Our team meets in Senegal every two months for retreats, which are one week in length. Wave covers all costs associated with travel to and from Senegal.

      • Salaries are calculated using a transparent formula. Salary for this role ranges between $120,000 to $155,000.

      Major benefits:

      • Subsidized health insurance for you and your dependents and retirement contributions (both vary from country-to-country)

      • 6 months fully paid parental leave and subsidized fertility assistance

      • Unlimited vacation with a 20-day minimum requirement

      • $10,000 annual charitable donation matching

      Requirements

      • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience as a software engineer. There's no need to have previous experience with our stack, if you are willing to learn.

      • Native or fluent English.

You might be a good fit if you

      • Are excited to deeply understand the inner workings of the tools you use.

      • Push through hard problems without giving up.

      • Are not afraid to take on complicated systems.

      • Reflexively ask yourself, “how will this code change affect my users?”

      • Can communicate clearly with colleagues who work, speak and think differently.

      • Work to make things easier for the next engineer who will touch your code.

      • Always try to improve as a programmer and colleague.

      Our team

We're a team of ~130 people (90 Senegalese and 40 International) who are deeply passionate about our mission of bringing great financial services to the people who need them most.

We foster autonomy for engineers. We have no project managers—you'll learn to own your own projects at every stage, from understanding the project to monitoring your solution in production.

We prize focus: we try to cut out all non-essential distractions so that you can spend as much time in the zone as possible. Aside from two weekly meetings—an all-hands and a one-on-one with your manager—your schedule is yours.

We care deeply about code quality. We do thorough design and code reviews, and frequently budget time for internal code improvement projects.

Our stack (note that we will train you on all of these—you don't need any prior experience): We have a Python 3 (+ mypy) backend, GraphQL API and Android (Kotlin) frontend, backed by a Postgres database. Our infrastructure is on GCP, managed with Kubernetes and Terraform. Learn more about engineering at Wave: https://wave.engineering/

We’re backed by world-class investors including Khosla Ventures, Founders Fund, Y Combinator, and the cofounders of PayPal.

      How to apply

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. If interested, please submit a resume as well as a cover letter describing your interest in Wave and the role.

Wave is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

      • DESIGN RESEARCH MANAGER

        Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Product Design Strategy Group is seeking a Design Research Manager to manage our small team of researchers and to organize, orchestrate and lead larger research initiatives. All the research projects the Design Strategy team takes on directly support various product development initiatives underway at any given time. A key aspect of this role will be to gather the pressing questions each product team is weighing, evaluate them in terms of urgency and potential impact, and then define lean methodologies for providing answers.

The Design Research Manager will act in a dual capacity of framing and managing design research projects across the Product team, tracking the work of individual design researchers while also contributing as a lead researcher. The person in this role will be responsible for developing the strategic research and experimentation that helps inform and inspire future product and platform decisions.

The Design Research Manager will also be accountable for the productivity and professional development of the researchers they manage as well as the general happiness and rapport of the team as a whole. This role will be augmented by a Program Manager focused on providing logistical, tactical and all other support needed to realize the research goals of the team.

Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects are complex places, both socially and technically — this position requires enthusiasm for learning about new communities, processes, and cultural norms.

        You are responsible for:

        • Managing people, their priorities and their professional growth
        • Managing team budget with the support of Design Research Program Manager
        • Effective collaboration and coordination with Design Research Program Manager
        • Translating organizational goals into project priorities
        • Driving department level objectives
        • Leading key research initiatives

        Skills and Experience:

        • Facility in qualitative and quantitative methodologies
        • Experience leading complex research projects from start to finish (solo and in collaboration with others)
        • Experience leading/managing international research efforts
        • Aptitude for defining and measuring project success
        • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
        • Strong time-management skills
        • Self sufficiency and ability to resolve what blocks your work within a cross-functional team environment
        • Comfortable working on short deadlines and the ability to pivot quickly
        • Collaborative nature (willingness to make collaboration across time zones via remote functionality work, as well as in person collaboration)
        • Academic training in Design Research, Behavioral or Social Sciences (e.g. sociology, social psychology, anthropology), Information Science, or Human-Computer Interaction background
        • 5+ years of professional experience in a research role, ideally on a product-focused team
        • 2+ years managing other researchers
        • Masters Degree or PhD in a related field
        • Experience working collaboratively with design teams to translate insights into actionable recommendations

Qualities that are important to us:

        • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams with data scientists and designers
        • A history of social activism, volunteering, and/or open source contribution
        • Experience contributing to Wikimedia projects
        • A strong portfolio of public presentations of research work (e.g. conference presentations, white papers, peer-reviewed manuscripts)

      • Join us in our mission to make website development fun by making it simple

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team dedicated to driving Gatsby’s open source project. Join us in our mission to make website development fun by making it simple.

        About us

Gatsby is a remote-first, community-focused team working to build a high-performance, fun to use, accessible, and astonishingly flexible presentation layer for any data source. Our core values include transparency (our work is public most of the time); creating a safe, high-trust team; building incredible developer experiences; maintaining a healthy working environment; and helping deliver web experiences that feel amazing to use on every device and connection type.

        Details of the role

        Type of Work: Full-time employee

        Location: Remote

        Why we need you

Gatsby is the future of the web, and the web is an incredibly diverse ecosystem. This means we need leaders who can intuitively appreciate the value that the commercial services we build offer customers. The open source team is expanding rapidly and we need someone with a deep understanding of the very cool technology, but an equally profound sense of empathy required to grow both individual contributors and future leaders in this critical part of our company.

        Why this is interesting

Gatsby is a wildly popular open-source framework that is changing the architecture of the web. The open-source team is responsible for driving the roadmap for the large and complex codebase that is Gatsby.js. Between their own contributions and the community, they merge nearly 500 pull requests in a typical month. You’ll help lead the team in not only tackling key technological challenges, but also bolstering and focusing community contributions.

        Your responsibilities

You will be responsible for people, projects, and processes. You will partner with your team and peers to:

        • Foster an inclusive environment through empathy, not just inside engineering, but across all the teams in Gatsby, and beyond to the open source community.

        • Wrangle many timezones and introduce remote work best practices, as you will lead a geographically diverse team.

        • Exercise good judgement in interacting with the enthusiastic community, as an exemplar for your team in this area.

        • Partner with Product and Design to find the best blend of quality, agility, and work/life sanity.

Make sure your team is fully equipped for their job, including:

        • Context - make sure they know what is happening outside engineering

        • Vision - make sure they know what it coming next, even if we’re not there yet

        • Skills - ensure that each team member grows and feels confident in delivery

        • Tools - choose and evolve the dev environment (with the team’s input)

        • Processes - hand-in-hand with tools, make sure that we’re continuously evolving our planning and dev approach to have just enough structure to keep us on track

        • Empower your team members by offering them clear ownership of technical challenges in a world where you and other leaders are still wearing many hats and finding the ones with the best fit.

        • Collaborate with other engineering managers to evolve the management practices at Gatsby. We’re all learning more every day!

This might be you if you….

        • Have successfully managed people, including recruiting and hiring, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and promoting.

        • Have experience working with (and ideally contributing to, or managing) open source communities and products.

        • Have strong communication skills, verbal and written.

        • Genuinely enjoy helping people, both inside the company and out.

        • Have a consistent track record of delivering high-quality software in regular, iterative releases through coordinating a remote team.

        • Are able to coordinate and work with teams and stakeholders across the organization, and even beyond the company, including effective project management skills in an environment where you may not control many of the variables.

        • Have previous experience with React, Node.js, and GraphQL. Gatsby is built on React, Node, and GraphQL, so you should be experienced with usage and the syntax.

        • Have strong empathy and a willingness to define the nuances of team roles (including your own!) as you go.

The best parts of this job

        • The people and culture of a team genuinely invested in building something great.

        • You’ll be helping curate one of the most popular, fastest growing open source frameworks in the world.

        • You’ll be leading a group of supportive, talented, and friendly people towards delivering a great framework and developer experience.

        • You’ll have the opportunity (even expectation) to constantly learn and innovate, in both tech approaches and process definition.

        • Your role will be key to making Gatsby the next way to build on the web—and a technology that enables the next billion internet users.

        • You will get to look back on this time as the “early, exciting days” of Gatsby. You’ll get to watch members of your team become future leaders and luminaries in a space that isn’t fully defined or formed yet.

The worst parts of this job (maybe)

        • The community and our team aren’t always operating as equals, and don’t always have perfectly aligned motivations. Your job includes the unenviable task of helping us figure out the right focus in a variety of complex situations, and with a wide range of (understandable, but sometimes mutually exclusive) community expectations.

        • We’re all still figuring a lot of stuff out. Things can feel unstructured or messy. Part of your job is to smooth out what we collectively don’t like. And that can be hard.

        • The company is growing fast, which means lots of people wearing lots of hats, and sometimes exchanging them for new ones. Doing this while protecting a team (or individual’s) sense of ownership and security is hard. And it’s part of this job. Sorry.

        • Product and strategic direction can change. We’re building a whole new area of growth in an absolutely huge potential market. Absorbing (and/or pushing back as you see fit) that change so your team doesn’t feel unnecessary churn is also hard. And also part of this job. Still sorry.

        Benefits

        • Unlimited vacation policy, with a minimum of 15 days paid vacation time

        • Amazing health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family (US only)

        • Skip the commute with remote work

        • 3 months of paid parental leave covering both adoption and foster placement

        • Fly to cool locations 3x/year for company-wide meetups

        • Stock options in a fast-growing startup

        • Gatsby Sabbatical: 4 weeks of paid vacation after 4 years tenure

        Equal Opportunity Statement

Gatsby is an equal opportunity employer. We eagerly seek applicants of diverse backgrounds and hire without regard to race, color, gender identity, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, physical abilities (or disability), age, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Cultivating inclusivity and diversity is a top priority.

Headhunters and recruitment agencies may not submit resumes/CVs through this website or directly to managers. Gatsby does not accept unsolicited headhunter and agency resumes, and will not pay fees to any third-party agency or company that does not have a signed agreement with Gatsby.
