      Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an Application Security Engineer to join the Security team working to help protect Wikipedia and our other projects. You'll be working with other developers and security engineers to create new security features, review the security of other people's code, and help find and fix security bugs before they're exploited.

YOU ARE ...a smart security practitioner with experience building and auditing security features in large scale systems. You understand the importance of testing and documentation, and common pitfalls in developing secure web applications. You must have a passion for the WMF mission. We do (almost) everything publicly, and volunteers can add arbitrary JavaScript to our site.

You will be joining a team responsible for ensuring the security and integrity of applications written in PHP, Python, Ruby, Lua, Perl, JavaScript (Node.js) among others, using both relational and key-value data storage mechanisms. (Don't worry, you don't need to have had experience with all of those technologies.)

We’d like you to do these things:

      • Triage and remediate reported security issues
      • Review and deploy features developed by the Foundation and community members
      • Work with other development teams to ensure that they make safe architectural and implementation choices
      • Constantly poke and abuse our software to find bugs before attackers do
      • Provide application security concept reviews and help socialize application security best practice
      • Provide support for application security operations

We’d like you to have these skills:

The right person is better than the right set of experiences, these are the traits we’ve identified make great additions to our team so far.

      • Two or more years of application security experience, including thorough understanding of issues documented in the OWASP Top Ten and CWE Top 25
      • Strong understanding of modern, object-oriented PHP development
      • In-depth experience developing or auditing client-side JavaScript
      • Demonstrated ability to exploit and mitigate application-level vulnerabilities
      • Experience conducting software security reviews using a combination of source code inspection, manual testing, and automated scanning
      • Patience in explaining security issues and their implications on privacy to non-technical audiences
      • Sensitivity to the security challenges faced by participants in a large, international project
      • Strong understanding of cryptography as applied to web application security (encryption, hashing, PKI management), including analysis and implementation
      • Experience using Linux at the command line for tasks related to web application development and deployment
      • Ability to maintain focus when working remotely

And it would be even more awesome if you have this:

In addition to the basic skills needed for being successful these skills could set you apart from the pack!

      • Experience as a contributor in the Wikipedia or Wikimedia project communities
      • Experience contributing to a consensus-based open source project
      • Experience developing, maintaining, or administering authentication systems

      About the Wikimedia Foundation

The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit organization that supports and hosts Wikipedia and its sister free knowledge sites. Based in San Francisco, California, the Wikimedia Foundation is an audited, 501(c)(3) non-profit that is funded primarily through donations and grants. It currently employs over 240 staff members.

At the Foundation, we build technology to help people everywhere access Wikipedia, across devices and in nearly 300 languages. We engineer privacy for our readers and editors so they can safely and securely explore Wikipedia. We create programs and initiatives to make Wikipedia freely available to more people in more parts of the world. • We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team dedicated to driving Gatsby’s open source project. Join us in our mission to make website development fun by making it simple.

      About us

Gatsby is a remote-first, community-focused team working to build a high-performance, fun to use, accessible, and astonishingly flexible presentation layer for any data source. Our core values include transparency (our work is public most of the time); creating a safe, high-trust team; building incredible developer experiences; maintaining a healthy working environment; and helping deliver web experiences that feel amazing to use on every device and connection type.

      Details of the role

Type of Work: Full-time employee Location: Remote

      Why we need you

Gatsby is the future of the web, and the web is an incredibly diverse ecosystem. This means we need leaders who can intuitively appreciate the value that the commercial services we build offer customers. The open source team is expanding rapidly and we need someone with a deep understanding of the very cool technology, but an equally profound sense of empathy required to grow both individual contributors and future leaders in this critical part of our company.

      Why this is interesting

Gatsby is a wildly popular open-source framework that is changing the architecture of the web. The open-source team is responsible for driving the roadmap for the large and complex codebase that is Gatsby.js. Between their own contributions and the community, they merge nearly 500 pull requests in a typical month. You’ll help lead the team in not only tackling key technological challenges, but also bolstering and focusing community contributions.

      Your responsibilities

You will be responsible for people, projects, and processes. You will partner with your team and peers to:

      • Foster an inclusive environment through empathy, not just inside engineering, but across all the teams in Gatsby, and beyond to the open source community.
      • Wrangle many timezones and introduce remote work best practices, as you will lead a geographically diverse team.
      • Exercise good judgement in interacting with the enthusiastic community, as an exemplar for your team in this area.
      • Partner with Product and Design to find the best blend of quality, agility, and work/life sanity.
      • Make sure your team is fully equipped for their job, including:

        • Context - make sure they know what is happening outside engineering
        • Vision - make sure they know what it coming next, even if we’re not there yet
        • Skills - ensure that each team member grows and feels confident in delivery
        • Tools - choose and evolve the dev environment (with the team’s input)
        • Processes - hand-in-hand with tools, make sure that we’re continuously evolving our planning and dev approach to have just enough structure to keep us on track
        • Empower your team members by offering them clear ownership of technical challenges in a world where you and other leaders are still wearing many hats and finding the ones with the best fit.
        • Collaborate with other engineering managers to evolve the management practices at Gatsby. We’re all learning more every day!
This might be you if you….
      • Have successfully managed people, including recruiting and hiring, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and promoting.
      • Have experience working with (and ideally contributing to, or managing) open source communities and products.
      • Have strong communication skills, verbal and written.
      • Genuinely enjoy helping people, both inside the company and out.
      • Have a consistent track record of delivering high-quality software in regular, iterative releases through coordinating a remote team.
      • Are able to coordinate and work with teams and stakeholders across the organization, and even beyond the company, including effective project management skills in an environment where you may not control many of the variables.
      • Have previous experience with React, Node.js, and GraphQL. Gatsby is built on React, Node, and GraphQL, so you should be experienced with usage and the syntax.
      • Have strong empathy and a willingness to define the nuances of team roles (including your own!) as you go.
The best parts of this job
      • The people and culture of a team genuinely invested in building something great.
      • You’ll be helping curate one of the most popular, fastest growing open source frameworks in the world.
      • You’ll be leading a group of supportive, talented, and friendly people towards delivering a great framework and developer experience.
      • You’ll have the opportunity (even expectation) to constantly learn and innovate, in both tech approaches and process definition.
      • Your role will be key to making Gatsby the next way to build on the web—and a technology that enables the next billion internet users.
      • You will get to look back on this time as the “early, exciting days” of Gatsby. You’ll get to watch members of your team become future leaders and luminaries in a space that isn’t fully defined or formed yet.
The worst parts of this job (maybe)
      • The community and our team aren’t always operating as equals, and don’t always have perfectly aligned motivations. Your job includes the unenviable task of helping us figure out the right focus in a variety of complex situations, and with a wide range of (understandable, but sometimes mutually exclusive) community expectations.
      • We’re all still figuring a lot of stuff out. Things can feel unstructured or messy. Part of your job is to smooth out what we collectively don’t like. And that can be hard.
      • The company is growing fast, which means lots of people wearing lots of hats, and sometimes exchanging them for new ones. Doing this while protecting a team (or individual’s) sense of ownership and security is hard. And it’s part of this job. Sorry.
      • Product and strategic direction can change. We’re building a whole new area of growth in an absolutely huge potential market. Absorbing (and/or pushing back as you see fit) that change so your team doesn’t feel unnecessary churn is also hard. And also part of this job. Still sorry.
      Benefits
      • Unlimited vacation policy, with a minimum of 15 days paid vacation time
      • Amazing health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family (US only)
      • Skip the commute with remote work
      • 3 months of paid parental leave covering both adoption and foster placement
      • Fly to cool locations 3x/year for company-wide meetups
      • Stock options in a fast-growing startup
      • Gatsby Sabbatical: 4 weeks of paid vacation after 4 years tenure
      Equal Opportunity Statement

Gatsby is an equal opportunity employer. We eagerly seek applicants of diverse backgrounds and hire without regard to race, color, gender identity, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, physical abilities (or disability), age, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Cultivating inclusivity and diversity is a top priority.

    • The data volume for our largest customers has increased more than 4x in the last year, and we’re scaling Heap to meet the demand. Our backend supports an expressive set of queries that need to come back with sub-second latencies and reflect up-to-the-minute data. To make this possible, we’re working on a novel distributed infrastructure.

We’re looking to bring on an Infrastructure Engineer to lead the DevOps side of this challenge. Help us de-risk our stack, add more 9s to our availability, and incorporate open source tooling.

You’ll own the design and development of our DevOps toolchain. You’ll build deploy pipelines and manage configurations. You’ll set up performance metrics and act on them to scale a complex distributed system.

We’re looking for stronger software engineering skills than a typical DevOps role requires. This is a building role, which happens to focus on stability, operability, and tooling, not an ops role. You’ll need to be able to understand our codebase and debug issues as they come up. Some example projects:

      • Determine how we'll do service discovery and incorporate it into a codebase that assumes static locations for services.

      • Figure out how we’ll package our code and deploy it from test → stage → production, and eventually eliminate manual deploys on production machines.

      • Where will new instances come from? Pre-baked AMIs? Terraform with vanilla images and a bunch of salt? Containers? Something else?

      • Determine how we’ll monitor, backup, and otherwise operate our Kafka cluster.

      • Much, much more.

We’d like to get to know you if:

      • You have experience with modern DevOps tooling - infrastructure as code, configuration management, CI pipelines, package managers - we need someone who has deep knowledge of the full DevOps ecosystem.

      • You communicate with clarity and precision. We care about this almost as much as your technical ability.

      • You’re self-directed with a strong sense for relative priority. There is low-hanging fruit everywhere. We need someone who has a good sense for which projects will have the most impact.

      • You have experience with AWS, especially EC2, VPC, and ELB.

      • (Bonus) You have experience with our stack. Heap runs on Kafka, ZooKeeper, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Node.js, with Terraform, SaltStack, and CircleCI for orchestration, configuration, and continuous integration.

Our HQ is in SF, and we have an office in New York, but a large part of our engineering team is remote. We cover relocation costs, and can sponsor visas. We'd love to hear from you, no matter where you are!

Heap has raised $95M in funding from NEA, Y Combinator, Menlo Ventures, SVAngel, Sam Altman, Garry Tan, Alexis Ohanian, Harj Taggar, Ram Shriram, and others.

People are what make Heap awesome. Regardless of age, education, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any personal characteristics, we want everyone to feel welcome. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive equal opportunity workplace everyone can call home.

You are able to help plan features from problem statements and loosely defined requirements. You are able to break large projects in manageable chunks to make them easier to work on and consume. You aren't scared to be wrong and don't always have to be right, and you have the ability to leave your ego at the door. What You Will Do:

      • Your primary focus will be the development of server-side capabilities on our eSignature SaaS platform and ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front-end.
      • You will execute projects, fix bugs, write tests, reduce technical debt, and maintain our documentation.
      • You will collaborate with various teams on a daily basis to make sure what we are creating will support both our internal and external stakeholders.
      • You will work with a Scrum methodology to make sure features ship as they are planned and scheduled.

      What We Are Looking For:

      • Knowledge of Node.js and frameworks such as Express to build RESTful APIs returning JSON
      • Understanding the nature of asynchronous programming, its quirks and workarounds, and experience writing or using JavaScript promises and/or async/await
      • DevOps experience and mentality - You recognize the importance of automating all build, test, and deploy activities for an application and have experience with CI/CD tools such as CircleCI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions and provisioning tools such as Terraform or Cloudformation.
      • Solid foundation in writing queries and updating NoSQL databases such as AWS DynamoDB
      • Experience using the AWS Javascript API to interface with S3 and DynamoDB
      • Good understanding of server-side and client-side javascript build tools and environments such as npm, yarn, Lerna, webpack, and babel
      • Understanding of serverless tools (AWS Lambda, serverless.com and/or Claudia.js frameworks)
      • Basic understanding of front-end technologies, such as HTML5, and CSS3 and React/AngularJS
      • Creating database schemas that represent and support business processes
      • Implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests
      • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
      • Familiarity with object-oriented development with Java a plus - especially with using Java APIs for PDF manipulation such as iText, Apache PDFBox, or JPedal

      Bonus Points:

      • Mobile app development experience
      • Experience working with well-performing agile teams
      • Experience working on a SaaS product
      • Experience integrating with 3rd party web applications (through REST API))
      • AWS certifications

      What Formstack Offers:

      • Free health plans, as well as company-paid Dental, Vision, Disability and Life Insurance Benefits for full-time employees.
      • Unlimited PTO for all employees

      About the Product

Designing and building the Ceros platform is not an easy task. We require the best-of-the-best web developers, designers, and QA testers, ready to bring the functionality of desktop software to the web, often pushing web browsers to the limits of what’s currently possible.

Our codebase is 95% JavaScript and the Ceros product is comprised of multiple single-page applications with a client-heavy focus. We use libraries like jQuery, Require, and Backbone. The Ceros Studio is architected around the HTML5 Canvas element.

We’re not language zealots. We believe in using the right tool for the job, and our current server-side infrastructure runs PHP, Node.js, Redis, AWS Aurora, Docker, Jenkins, etc. on the Amazon AWS cloud.

We take our jobs seriously but ourselves not so much -- whether it’s cracking jokes in the chat room or poking fun at the CEO’s atrocious spelling.

      About the Job

      OUR MISSION:

Build intelligent tools that help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.

      Hi! We're Forerunner.

We believe that adaptation is a necessity, not a luxury, and all communities should have access to powerful software that helps them plan for the future. The challenge of climate change is complex — it implicates how municipalities plan, manage capital, and communicate to both residents and higher levels of government. Forerunner helps local communities do these things better by empowering them to access, understand, and mobilize local-level flood risk data at scale. Our software is built to be easy-to-use, so that the planners and floodplain managers preparing for our future can focus on the important stuff.

Currently, we're working with a handful of communities, including the City of New Orleans and Pinellas County, FL. Our engineering team is hard at work on projects that involve extracting information from permits, managing complex datasets, and incorporating geospatial data. Our mission is ambitious, and we have a significant amount of work ahead. As our newest team member, you'll be joining us at a crucial time when you'll have a real impact on our direction and our partner municipalities' success.

      About the position:

We're looking for a senior full-stack engineer with 5+ years of experience to join us. We would love to hear from you if you're interested in what we do and have a proven track record of leading mid- to large-scale technical initiatives. In general, you might be a good fit if you:

      • Have partial, or full, familiarity with our technical stack: Node, GraphQL, React, Postgres + PostGIS, Heroku. If not, we would like you to be confident in your ability to ramp up quickly.

      • Are comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity. Since we are constantly learning a lot from our partners, we are looking for someone who has a bias toward action and can balance the challenging trade-off between quality and speed.

      • Consider yourself to be a great communicator. We're a small team working remotely, which requires us to be prompt and clear with written and spoken communication.

Our team has a lot to offer.

Forerunner is a seed-stage company with an interdisciplinary team. We are motivated by seemingly intractable problems and work hard to support one another.

      • We're mission driven. Our mission orients our business strategy and pushes us to work with a sense of urgency. We’re in the weeds — our entire team spends time engaging with our partners in the field to better understand the real-world challenges they face.

      • We're a small team. We're currently 4 people — you will be the 5th. As a member of our growing team, you will quickly become an invaluable part of our organization and have a meaningful impact on our business and technical direction. We welcome unique perspectives and backgrounds. Your opinion matters and we hope you'll share it.

      • We're remote. While many of us are based in NYC, we're happy to have you work where you are happiest and most productive. We offer schedule flexibility and ask for accountability in return.

      • We want you to be happy and healthy. Forerunner offers competitive compensation, health/vision/dental coverage (we pay 70%), and commuter benefits. We also have a quarterly wellness reimbursement so that you can have flexibility in defining what health means to you.

We look forward to meeting you. To apply or ask questions, shoot us a message at [email protected]!

      • Join us in our mission to make website development fun by making it simple

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team dedicated to driving Gatsby’s open source project.

        Type of Work: Full-time employee

        Location: Remote

Make sure your team is fully equipped for their job, including:

Headhunters and recruitment agencies may not submit resumes/CVs through this website or directly to managers. Gatsby does not accept unsolicited headhunter and agency resumes, and will not pay fees to any third-party agency or company that does not have a signed agreement with Gatsby.
