    • Silverfin (CET +/- 3 hrs)
Seasoned Ruby Developer - Spring 2020

If you’re any good at Ruby, this is probably not the first job ad you’ve seen, so we’ve done our best to stand out while also accurately presenting what we’re all about. If it sounds like you would enjoy working with us, don’t hesitate to apply or drop us a line with questions on [email protected].

      Ahum. Here it comes.

      What’s a Silverfin?

At Silverfin we’re trying to apply the promise of software to the age-old industry of accounting. With our SaaS we’re automating a large chunk of the busy-work that accountants are currently handling manually, and are building new tools so they can provide better services to their customers. We aim to optimize their workflow in such a way that accountants can spend more time on the much more impactful and rewarding work of advising their customers, the business owners.

The good news is we’re succeeding in doing exactly that. Every day more than 15.000 financial service professionals use Silverfin to help and advise more than 200.000 businesses. Our customers adore us! The even better news is there’s still plenty left to work on, and that’s where we hope you come in.

What makes the engineering team at Silverfin special?

We’re a remote-first engineering team of 25 people distributed in 14 different countries. A priority for us is maintaining proper work-life balance. We avoid meetings as much as possible, accept deadlines only when absolutely necessary, and never expect anyone to work longer hours than they’ve signed up for. A day in our working lives is pretty boring in this regard, and we feel that’s exactly how it should be.

Working with us means you can be flexible with your schedule. It’s OK to disappear for a few hours in the middle of the day to run some errands, get a haircut, pick up the kids — whatever reason, you don’t need to explain yourself. You also fully decide when you take time off: our team is sufficiently varied and well organized that there are always enough people around to handle the load, and in the rare cases it’s not, we will decrease the load instead of asking people to move their holiday.

Being remote-first means we favor asynchronous communication. We don’t shy away from chatting in Slack, but the important decisions or discussions are done in Gitlab issues, over email, or in our wiki, so there’s a written, persisted record. We’re mindful of maintaining long chunks of focussed time, which means we avoid @-mentions or PMs on Slack, and other triggers and interrupts. We encourage using Slack’s DnD function, especially when you’re not working!

We’d be really happy to welcome you in our #dev channel, but it’s not just virtual: we make sure we regularly get to see each other in real life too. Twice a year we fly the whole engineering team together to a different location in Europe, and at least once a year we join up with the rest of the company so we can spend some time together with the other departments.

What does working at Silverfin look like?

We work in nimble teams around 5 people in size, with each team taking ownership of a specific set of features of the application. Teams are responsible for a full slice across the stack, so both the backend as well as the frontend of each part is maintained by the same people.

You’ll be supported by our UI designer who develops and maintains HTML and CSS components into a reusable UI-framework, and even builds Vue.js prototypes where necessary, handling compatibility problems with different browsers for you, and making sure everything is responsive as well.

Our ops team ensures things run smoothly, deploys happen correctly, and will work with you when issues should arise. We’re enthusiastic followers of the devops mindset, which means ops and developers work together to solve problems, and empower each-other to be self-sufficient, instead of throwing problems over the wall to the “other side”.

Our stack is Vue.js and vanilla JS with a sprinkling of jQuery on the frontend and an up-to-date Rails monolith on the backend. We use PostgreSQL and Redis for persistence and caching, and everything is running on a Kubernetes cluster in Google Cloud. Our daily tools include GitLab, Quip and Slack, with Zoom as our remote conferencing tool of choice.

No code gets deployed without a code-review by a peer and testing is a must. Our pipeline automates deployment when the suite is green, and deploys happen dozens of times a day. Each team is currently doing Kanban, but they’re free to follow whatever process suits them best. There are regular retros held to work towards continuous improvement.

Software for accountants is not considered to be very exciting, but we have our fair share of technical challenges. To give you a sense of scale: our database exceeds 7TB*, and our largest table recently crossed the 10 billion row mark. We interface with more than 30 different external APIs, and provide third parties an API of our own.

*: Our ops team noted that this actually isn’t that hard to achieve if you’re just indexing everything, but it still sounds impressive, right?

What does your future look like?

Personal growth is key to staying motivated. At Silverfin you don’t need to move to management in order to get promoted. We see the individual contributor track and the management track as two different growth paths which every engineer can follow and switch between. You can be promoted, including pay raises, as a contributor just like as a manager.

Everyone has a €1000 yearly budget to spend on conferences, courses, workshops or other training to improve their skills and level up. This also includes accommodation, travel costs. If the conference is on a workday you’ll get paid like any normal day. Silverfin colleagues regularly visit conferences across the world. Are you going to Euruko this year? Come say hi!

We’re looking to hire a lot of new colleagues, and by the end of the year we’d like to have a couple of more teams. Each new team would also need a new teamlead, and we prefer to promote from within the engineering team. This means if you’d like to step onto the management track, there will be plenty of opportunities to do so in the near future. We pro-actively keep track of who would be interested, and provide feedback and learning opportunities to work towards such a goal.

      What are we looking for?
      • You’re experienced in both Ruby and Rails, and also understand where the boundaries lie between them. You can code in Ruby without any of Rails’ training wheels if necessary.
      • You’re up for mentoring coworkers and can give in-depth, productive feedback during code reviews. While you appreciate the small stuff, you recognize bikeshedding and can avoid its pitfalls.
      • You code with reason and can justify the important decisions you made during development.
      • You can communicate clearly in English, both written and verbally.
      • You know and can apply best practices when relevant. That means the usual like version control, testing, and refactoring; but also higher level concepts such as good object oriented design.
      • You're aware of the trade-offs involved in proper engineering and can make balanced business decisions, keeping in mind all the stakeholders of the project.
      • You’ve got opinions on code design and you can discuss them, but you’re professional enough to not let those opinions get in the way of a consensus if necessary.
      What can we offer you?
      • Actual, proper work-life balance
      • Choose your own working hours and work 100% remotely
      • Personal growth training and opportunities
      • Join a distributed remote-first engineering team with 25 colleagues in 14 different countries
      • A refreshing work environment with professional, friendly and welcoming colleagues
      • A €1000 yearly budget for conferences, courses, workshops or other expenses that will improve your skills
      Requirements
      • You have at least 4 years of experience working with Ruby, or 2 years of experience with Ruby and 4 years in other languages.
      • You get Rails
      • Your work hours have some overlap with EU business hours (we require your local timezone to be within CET +/- 3h)
      Nice to have’s

These would be nice but are definitely not necessary. Don’t worry if none of the following applies to you.

      • Experience as a remote worker in a fully remote team
      • Experience with Javascript (ES6) and frontend frameworks
      • Experience working with large datasets and the problems they bring
      • Experience in Fintech
      • Accounting knowledge

Hi there, thanks for stopping by.

What follows is a bit lengthy, but will give you a better idea of what we do, what we value and how we work.

      what we do

You know those websites that make it impossible to add an item to your cart, sign up for a newsletter or enter your credit card information? Sooo frustrating, right?! Instead of buying the pants or entering your email, you throw up your hands, mutter a curse word or two and immediately head over to YouTube to watch cat videos.

At surefoot, we make life easier for web surfers and shoppers like you.

We ease user frustrations, improve conversions and craft data stories that help our clients make sound, data-informed business decisions.

      How, you ask?

In short, we formulate hypotheses based on data from sources like Google Analytics, HotJar and customer service data, which allow us to identify the biggest friction points on our clients’ sites. Then, we validate or invalidate our hypotheses in the form of A/B tests, whose results we analyze to determine the optimal site experience.

front end A/B test engineer role and requirements

As a Front End A/B Test Engineer, you’ll work closely with strategic directors, account managers, designers and QA to build tests the team has prioritized for our clients. This is a unique front-end role, as you’ll be writing code that is inserted into websites via 3rd party testing tools like Optimizely, Convert or Google Optimize. Ethical hacking, of sorts.

The position is for a fully-remote independent contractor and open to U.S.-based applicants only. Currently, the role offers 5-10 hours per week but we expect that number to grow as the company does.

**Something important we want you to know ahead of time is that this job is a bit different than your standard front-end gig. You won’t be working on a single app or feature for several months. Instead, you’ll be writing smaller chunks of code on a lot of different projects for a variety of clients. One day it could be an exit intent modal, the next could be restructuring a nav – the possibilities are endless. Your code will sometimes (often) be part of a losing test and never see the light of production, which is one reason we value efficiency over perfect, beautiful code.

TL;DR – if you’re someone who enjoys endless refactoring and the idea of writing “throwaway code” gives you heart palpitations, this job probably won’t light your fire.

If you’re still with us, here are the requirements:

      must-haves

      • Able to communicate clearly and concisely with good “email voice”

      • Intermediate-Advanced to Advanced knowledge of Javascript, jQuery, HTML, CSS, Sass

      • Git and command line proficiency

      • Past experience developing for mobile, desktop and tablet

      • Self-motivation, ability to work independently and remotely, the desire to continuously learn and grow

      • Hobbies outside of work

      nice-to-haves

      • Experience with testing tools like Optimizely, Convert, Dynamic Yield or others

      • Experience with Google Analytics

      • Familiarity or understanding of frameworks like React, Node and Angular

      • Funny GIF library, good emoji usage, sense of humor

      our values and culture

Our values are extremely important to us and we stake the company on them. This means that even the Grand Poobah of Javascript won’t be considered if our values don’t align.

be nice and do the right thing. We firmly believe that this world could use a bit more kindness so we strive to infuse it throughout our interactions – with clients, each other, our communities and all those we meet. Doing the right thing means we refuse to waiver on doing what is best for our business or our clients, even if it means less upside for us.

own your mistakes, learn from them and move on. Our preferred path is to “fail fast”. In other words, identify your mistakes, take ownership, discuss what you learned, identify solutions for ways to correct them so they don’t happen again and move on.

dedication to your craft and our clients. While we do track how many hours are spent working on each client, we value output over hours. As long as you’re a US citizen, we don’t much care where you work from. However, we do care mightily that your work is done with efficiency, precision and pride.

make it easy for people to say “yes”. If a process isn’t working or hindering you in some way, don’t wait to be asked to fix it. Instead, like Nike says, Just Do It™. Make it work for you. Experiment. You’re a smart, capable person so don’t ask permission. Arrive with a well-thought-out solution that makes it easy for everyone to say “yes” to, you smarty, you.

      ready to apply?

Since we are a fully remote team, we have a somewhat atypical interview process. For the first step of the interview phase, we ask applicants to show basic competency in the necessary skill sets (don’t worry, no hazing a la “live code fizzbuzz” is involved).

If all is well there, you’ll move on to phase two which involves a Zoom video call to get to know one another a bit better. If we’re feeling good about that, we’ll contact your references.

And finally, if your references check out and confirm you’re not a stabber, we’ll ask you to do some actual paid work with us to determine fit for both parties.

To apply, compose an email to [email protected] and [email protected] with the following:

      • Your desired hourly rate and amount of time you’re available per week

      • A link to your GitHub, StackOverflow, or other dev profile

      • Any relevant experience you have with A/B testing

      • Paste a link to your code from this exercise

All applicants will receive a response. surefoot is an equal opportunity employer and we are committed to building a company that embraces and celebrates diversity and inclusion. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

We are well-funded and venture-backed by prominent investors including Grotech Ventures, Greycroft, and Starvest Partners.

      About the Product

Ceros provides multiple products and the Devops team supports them all.

The core Ceros (https://ceros.com) product is comprised of multiple single-page applications (Admin, Studio, and Player) written in Javascript using libraries like jQuery, Require, and Backbone.  It is supported by a REST backend built in PHP. The Ceros Studio is built around the HTML5 Canvas element.

We’re in the midst of migrating both the frontend and backend to Typescript.

The infrastructure uses Docker, Jenkins, and Cloudformation. We use a myriad of AWS offerings. We also use Okta for authentication and Fastly as a CDN.  We’re eying a migration to Terraform and Kubernetes.

The DevOps team also supports Markup (https://markup.io), which is built in React and Typescript on the frontend and Typescript on the backend.  Its infrastructure uses Terraform and Kubernetes on AWS.

      About the Team

As part of the Ceros product team, you’ll be working with a cross-functional group of the most talented people you’ve ever worked with. We hire only passionate and creative people with a proven and unquestionable ability to execute, and every member of the team is equally responsible for moving the product forward.

When you work at Ceros, you check your ego at the door, and you aren’t afraid to be honest, especially to yourself. We take our jobs seriously but ourselves not so much.

The DevOps team is the primary caretaker of the infrastructure, responsible for owning the infrastructure roadmap and pushing it forward.  We’re constantly looking to improve the infrastructure to make it more stable, scalable, available, more easily deployed, and easier to work with.

We follow DevOps principles, which means we view ourselves as the deep knowledge and support for all the developers when they need to write infrastructure code for their stories and fight the tendency to silo on a daily basis.  We each attend one of the other development team’s standups as a liaison and we keep the door to the #devops slack wide open for anyone who has questions. We review the other team’s infrastructure code to make sure it’s in line with where we want to go.  And we work to build better tooling around development processes to support the other teams in their work to push the product forward.

      About the Job

As a DevOps focused engineer, your typical day-to-day involves:

      • Evaluating, testing and building new infrastructure tools and technology

      • Writing detailed planning documents on stories so your teammates can assess the proposed approaches to a story, offer suggestions of approaches missed, and we can all agree on where to go from there

      • Writing maintainable code (probably goes without saying)

      • Carrying out and being on the receiving end of intense code review sessions from your peers who hold your work (and their own) to the highest of standards

      • Helping the full stack development teams write infrastructure code, and reviewing said code

      • Writing clear documentation around infrastructure code and development tooling so that it’s easy to understand, use, and modify

      • Working closely with the rest of the team to deploy new releases and data migrations without hiccups

      • And finally, ensuring the availability of the Ceros platform

      What we’re looking for:

      • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, infrastructure orchestration, containerization, linux administration... you know, DevOps.

        • In particular, several years of experience with Terraform and Kubernetes.

      • An eagerness to write well documented, clear code.  You understand that infrastructure code is still code and the principles of documentation and organization that apply to every other kind of code, still apply here.

      • The wisdom of experience.  You understand that principles and design patterns are important guidelines, but not hard and fast rules.  You know when to apply a pattern and when not to, when to hold fast to a certain principle, and when to let it go.  You understand that sometimes we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good and we’ll have to take on tech debt, but when we do, it should be with consideration and intention (and should be documented).

      • An eagerness to learn.  We’re looking for engineers who are able and eager to keep up with the pace of our rapidly evolving field.

      Key things to know
