Company Description

As an Etsy employee, you can do the work you love, be yourself, and make an impact in the lives of millions. Our commitments to diversity and inclusion, team culture and the spaces where we work all reflect our mission to keep commerce human.

Job Description

The Observability team provides expertise and access for Etsy engineers to the three pillars of Observability: logs, metrics and tracing. We strive for a balance between software and systems thinking to build reliability into our solutions. We are also a key player in Etsy’s ongoing cloud native transformation. Our team is part of the Developer Infra group whose mission is to provide development environments, tools and infrastructure to enable Etsy product engineers to build product features, and efficiently and confidently put them into production.

Some examples of current projects include improving the long-term storage of our metrics, deploying a new tracing pipeline, and further decoupling of our logging pipeline to improve reliability.

About Etsy Engineering

The technical staff at Etsy believes that code is craft, and that the work we do is part of a larger creative culture represented by the hundreds of thousands of inspired artists and designers who make Etsy such a unique marketplace. We believe that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We believe in measuring everything, taking advantage of our pioneering continuous deployment system to ship code early and often, and a blameless culture based on trust and a commitment to learning. About Location

The Observability team is spread between our Brooklyn HQ as well as our office in Dublin, Ireland and we are currently hiring for both locations. We believe that open communication and effective teamwork can happen regardless of where you sit, and we’ll provide you with tools to make sure that happens. Your laptop will come with our video conferencing software pre-installed, so you can always join in on meetings and catch up face-to-face with your team regardless of where in the world you or they are.

This role is ideally based out of our Brooklyn office but is also open to remote work in all US states (except Alaska and Hawaii).

About the Role
  • Maintain and improve Etsy’s observability tools, allowing easy access to metrics, logs and tracing.

  • Build on Etsy’s strong reputation as an innovator in the metrics space, and constantly improve how we generate, store, visualize and alert on our metrics.

  • Give our internal customers (Etsy engineers) a simple and reliable set of tools to process, store and ship logs.

  • Help engineers better understand their systems through distributed tracing.

  • Seek opportunities to improve our architecture, operability or capabilities.

  • Validate your hypotheses and inform your decision making using data.

  • Collaborate with your teammates and peers across Platform and Product Engineering.

About You

You’ll be successful in this role if you have:

  • 5 or more years of experience in a software / systems engineering role or similar.

  • A proven understanding of the value of Observability as a practice.

  • A customer focus, building with a user in mind and thinking of infrastructure and services in product terms.

  • Proficiency with one or more programming languages (PHP, Python, Go, Ruby or other equivalent languages).

  • Substantial experience with cloud architectures (GCP, AWS), and working with Kubernetes or other container orchestration frameworks.

  • Experience with logging systems and concepts (Elasticsearch, Fluentd, Splunk, etc).

  • Experience with metrics systems (Statsd, Prometheus, Graphite etc) and associated best practices.

  • Experience with distributed tracing platforms (Lightstep, Honeycomb, Jaegar, Zipkin etc).

  • Professional experience in a web application shop, especially in a "continuous deployment" environment.

  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to take on a mentoring role with teammates and peers
