Job type: Full-time

Hiring from: Americas, EMEA

Category: Software Dev

We’re hiring a full stack web developer to assure that our potential users have a delightful experience on our online store where they get to know us, check out products and manage their subscriptions. On top of that, you’ll solve challenges of our apps with 6 other developers. Either on the frontend (Electron, React, …) or backend (Java, Kotlin, Kubernetes, …) side, whatever fits you more.

Our online store is built with Woocommerce and it’s based on PHP, HTML, CSS, and JS. You should have solid experience and feel comfortable to work with all of those four. This is a crucial requirement for this position.

We at Timeular try to help people to have more time for the important things in their lives. More and more people are realizing that time results = money and therefore working fewer hours per week very focused on the right things is much more efficient than an 80-100 hour workweek with constant distractions. On top, this result focused approach comes with the huge advantage of having plenty of time to enjoy an exciting life outside of work.

As we live what we pray we will not ask you to work a crazy amount of hours. In fact, we try hard to protect your time. In return, we ask you to do your best job every day every 40 hour week. Sounds like a fair deal right?

We are a fully remote team consisting of 17 people working from 5 countries, are between 20 and 40 years old and are ~40% female. You can work from anywhere in the world, as long as you schedule your work day to have 4 hours or more overlap with Vienna time (CEST/UTC+1).

About you and this role

The main purpose of this role is to create a delightful experience on our online store and increase the performance thereof. However, this will not be your only responsibility, as you will be solving challenges with our other developers on our apps (timeular.com/download) as well. Either on the frontend or backend side, whatever fits you best.

Here are some examples of responsibilities you will have:

  • Implement fully designed pages or parts in our webshop with minimalistic, reusable CSS and well-structured HTML

  • Measure and improve the performance of our webshop to save time for our customers and increase the conversion rates

  • Proactively suggest what to improve to improve the UX for our (potential) users

  • Support our Growth team to find efficient solutions to run their experiments e.g. pricing tests, A/B testing, landing pages, signup-forms etc. and measure the results thereof

  • Debug issues that customers report to our support and solve them in a quick and simple way

  • Add new payment systems e.g. Paypal Express or Amazon Pay to our shop

  • Work on our backend integrations or API’s or style and tweak the UI of our apps, whatever fits you best

  • As you can see there is a challenging variety of tasks, but we believe there are many people like us who love and need challenges and if so, combined with a solid knowledge to start from, can solve them all. If you feel you have solid experience with HTML, CSS, PHP, and JS and those examples don’t scare you, then don’t hesitate to apply. We will give you everything else you need during the hands-on onboarding period.

  • Something that would make you stand out (though it’s not a must-have) is to have already worked in Woocommerce and/or other eCommerce projects. Another thing would be to have good design skills too. If so, please make sure to share something about that in the application.

About you and our culture

  • As we work remotely, we communicate a lot in written form. To help you demonstrate the strong writing skills you’ll need for this role, we’ve made the first part of this application process a written task.

  • We believe that the most time efficient communication style, whether it’s client-facing or with your team members, is to be direct but respectful. We’re honest and transparent to each other and we support each other. So should you.

  • We work very independently and therefore have to be highly self-motivated. This doesn’t mean we don’t achieve things together and never talk to each other but you should be comfortable working remotely most of the time. Loneliness and de-motivation might hit you here and there, but we’re all been through this and have learned a few things.

  • We respect time because time is the most valuable thing we have: we show up, deliver and communicate in time. We respect everyone’s private time unless there is a real urgency.

  • We say no to distractions and focus on the important things. We seek a minimal path with the highest possible output. We single task our way along that path. We keep meetings efficient. Basically, we focus on focus.

About the pay and benefits

  • We’re still at the beginning of our journey and therefore can’t afford to pay huge salaries; however, we manage that with other benefits, which are mostly about helping you to live a healthy life outside of work.

  • The transparent salary for this role at hiring ranges between $52,000 and $98,000, depending on several factors like the country you’re in (taxes, living costs etc…) and your experience. After one year of working full-time at Timeular you can participate in the employee stock option pool.

The benefits we offer are:

  • Work where, when and how you want as long as you have 4 hours overlap with Vienna time (CEST/UTC+1).

  • 50 days of paid holidays (including national holidays) because we’ve learned that time off is the best source for great ideas.

  • Three paid team retreats per year to spend an incredible time together discovering unique locations and amazing food. All costs covered.

    Position Overview: The technical engine behind our work is ITEP’s Microsimulation Tax Model. Developed in 1996, the model computes the revenue yield and incidence of federal, state and local taxes, including both current tax law and proposed tax law changes. The model is unique in its ability to produce analysis at the federal and state levels and to analyze income, consumption and property taxes.

    We seek a Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) to join ITEP’s creative, passionate and productive staff team as our Lead Tax Model Platform Developer.

    As the Lead Tax Model Platform Developer, you will begin working with an existing Python code base and complete the migration of the model from a legacy platform to the new Python platform. Completion of this project will set up ITEP’s tax model in a sustainable web-based environment, preserving our current model’s functionality and generating sufficient flexibility for longer-term development of content and user-driven enhancements.

    Beyond the platform migration, ongoing responsibilities include timely problem-solving to adapt the platform to respond to frequent tax policy proposals and changes, improving the efficiency of the platform to make users more productive, collaborating with our senior economist to integrate updated data, and developing a lengthy product roadmap (including external facing products that make our model accessible to state and national partners).

    This role reports directly to ITEP’s senior economist and works closely with the entire policy analyst team.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead front and backend technical development work as part of the reconfiguration of ITEP’s microsimulation tax model—currently based on legacy Visual Fox Pro (VFP) code—to a Python web app (built on the Django framework) to be deployed on an Azure platform.

    • Lead the technical development, integration and iterative improvement of ITEP’s tax modeling capacities.

    • Communicate clearly with multiple constituencies, soliciting and digesting feedback from both technical and non-technical users.

    • Ensure that all code development, data handling and version control are done efficiently, securely, transparently and in a manner that improves user productivity and timeliness.

    • Support documentation of ITEP’s model processes.

    Opportunities

    • Contribute fundamentally to ITEP’s mission as a progressive tax policy organization.

    • Interact with the software development communities, representing the high quality of engineering work at ITEP.

    • Opportunities to deepen your technical architecture skills or develop technical management skills based on your career aspirations.

     Required Experience and Skills

    • Three to five years of experience as a full stack software engineer.

    Specific experience with:

    • managing cloud deployments (e.g., Azure, AWS and/or Google Cloud);

    • managing Python web app development;

    • designing server-side and client-side architecture;

    • optimizing database function and management (ideally PostgreSQL);

    • using object-relational mapping (ORM).

    • Ability to manage two or more concurrent projects, working both independently as well as with a team.

    • Ability to effectively communicate with non-technical users, responding effectively to user needs.

    • Ability to write effective technical documentation.

    • In addition, other helpful (though not necessary) experience would include having worked remotely on a software development team and having developed and deployed software for governments and/or nonprofit organizations.

    Start date: Preferred start date is August 2019.

    Location: Flexible. ITEP is located in Washington, DC, however we are open to hiring a remote staff member for this position. Remote staff are required to travel to DC a minimum of 4 times a year.

    Work Schedule: Full time

    Salary: $70,000-$90,000

    Benefits: Generous package including 100% coverage for health and dental premiums; vision, disability and life insurance; paid family leave; flexible sick and vacation leave; 10% salary paid into SEP IRA retirement plan; and other ancillary benefits.
