We need you to help us shape the future of air freight! At cargo.one we believe that we can only win as a team, and we want you to make an impact with us!

What's the role like?

As an engineering manager, you will be responsible for a cross-functional, self-organizing Scrum team. All your direct reports will be part of the team and you will split your time between managing the team and working hands-on as a senior software engineer.

What do we mean by managing? Obviously Scrum puts a big emphasis on the concept of self-organization. We don’t want you to be a micromanager and distribute tickets. Instead, we want you to act as a leader and coach within the team. Help the team and each individual to improve their organizational skills. Lead by example, show how it is done right then make sure the team adopts the best habits and approaches. You can then be confident that things don’t fall apart when you are on your summer break. You will give regular candid feedback, everything from 1:1’s to career progression plans, and participate in 360° feedback. Your job is to empower and elevate the people you are responsible for.

We already mentioned Scrum, right? If you have read the Scrum guide before or worked in a proper Scrum team, this already gives you a first idea about how we do things. We expect you to live and represent the core values of commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect.

Next to the values of the Scrum framework, cargo.one has its own leitmotif. If this sounds like a place you want to work in or have already worked in, that’s a strong sign we should talk!

Let’s look at some more things you will do when you work with us.
  • You will work with technologies like Python 3, Javascript, Flask, Vue.js, PostgreSQL and redis. We are running a service-oriented architecture with synchronous gRPC endpoints and Airflow for asynchronous workloads. All of it runs in the Google Cloud Platform on top of Kubernetes. Learn more about our tech stack and how we work here.
  • We want you to lead and inspire. Make sure people are well equipped to work in our organization and help them to improve.
  • We expect you to act as a catalyst for good agile practices. Support the team in getting the most out of their retrospectives and help them refine their planning and forecasting.
  • We are constantly thinking about our users. Obviously there are lots of people in the organization who are even closer to them, from customer service agents to account managers and of course our product team. Nonetheless, it is our job to ask “why?” a lot, challenge assumptions and bring our unique perspective as software engineers to the table.
  • We hate complacency. Everyone is expected to share knowledge, give feedback, support others to grow and display leadership when the team needs it most.

What do I need to bring to the table?
  • First of all at least a good amount of years of relevant experience. We won’t commit to a minimum number, but we expect you to have managed a cross-functional team of engineers in an agile environment before and that you can hold your own as a senior software engineer.
  • As a hands-on manager, you will spend a good share of your time close to the code. You should feel motivated to work in that capacity.
  • At cargo.one growth is a priority. You should be interested in and passionate about developing people personally and professionally as well as have experience dealing with complex people issues.
  • You should be interested in building an amazing product. Have empathy for the user. Care about the work we do here and enjoy the opportunity to influence an industry.
  • You have to be an active and open collaborator and communicator, in and outside the team. Verbal and written communication are both highly relevant to what we are doing.
  • We value a good theoretical foundation. Never used Python before? Not a problem from our perspective. If you have experience with Ruby, Java, Go, PHP or something similar, you will be up to speed quickly. Much more important is that you have a strong understanding of fundamentals.
  • Serve the team. If you plow through the tasks you picked but your team struggles to deliver on another aspect of the sprint, nothing is won.
