Hello!

Thanks for taking a look at the job description for a Chief Architect at Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just throwing you right in there with words like “revolutionizing” and “disrupting”.

As such, we want you to know that the person that wrote this job description apologises in advance for any clichés, startup tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.

What is Impala now?

Impala makes building travel software incredibly easy. We provide hotels with a powerful data management platform that makes connecting to software, hardware and room distributors extremely easy. Think Twilio for Travel.

We launched in January 2019 and since then have grown at - quite frankly - a ridiculous pace. Our technology is already installed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, on six continents and categorises more than 1 billion data points.

We are a growing team of exceptional people split across engineering, product and commercial that have built a fantastic, remote-but-far-from-distant community.

Where is Impala going?

We’re supported by some of the best investors in the business, the early stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago and more. They’re on board because of our vision - revolutionizing a $1.6 trillion dollar market that’s been out-of-date for 20 years.

Within the next two years, 25% of hotel bookings worldwide will flow through Impala technology and the product that we’re building will empower the entire ecosystem of travel technology (we already have over a thousand companies signed up).

Anyone travelling anywhere will interact with products powered by Impala and to achieve this we’re growing the team to 50 people within the next year. So now is the most exciting time to be joining Impala as we go through a large push to scale up!

A brief overview of what you’ll be up to in this role:

As chief architect, you will act as the technical authority in a top-tier engineering team, ensuring that our technology can meet both immediate and future needs. You will report to (and work alongside) our VP of Engineering.

Technology sits at the heart of our business, which makes this a pivotal role with key responsibilities:

  • You will lead on technology strategy & prioritization, managing short term technical risks and long term investment in our stack
  • You will be accountable for technical quality at Impala, including the reliability, security, and extensibility of our services and data
  • You will ensure that monitoring, metrics and SRE practices are in place across all teams and services, to measure and meet high service SLA’s / expectations
  • You will be the direct leader of an enablement group, which provides specialist  technical/DevOps/SecOps support to our development teams
  • You will provide technical direction and mentorship across teams to support the development of individuals

You should join us if:

  • You have 10+ years of relevant and diverse product and engineering experience, with a period of executive-level responsibility at an organization with a strong engineering culture
  • You are an expert in the architectural design, development, and operation of large scale, high availability services
  • You have demonstrated experience with modern web services, distributed service-oriented architectures and services that handle large quantities of data, across multiple different stacks.
  • You aren’t afraid to get hands-on when necessary to demonstrate an approach / principle
  • You are comfortable leading and mentoring teams and individuals

Where in the world will you be working?

This is a remote position. This means you can work from anywhere +/- 2 Hours of London, timezone wise (and less than a 3 hour flight). We are a remote-first company, our whole engineering team is fully distributed! This was a very deliberate choice to prioritise work-life balance and ensure we’re able to accommodate the best people in Europe. We have loads of remote initiatives to ensure you’re fully setup!:

  • We give you an additional generous Personalised Workspace Budget for things like monitors, keyboards, desk chairs and headphones.
  • We offer an office stipend (you can furnish a home office with a generous monthly stipend, or choose a co-working space near you).
  • You’ll travel once a quarter to meet and socialise with the rest of the engineering team somewhere in Europe.
  • You’ll have a generous Social Budget to travel to London based social events. You'll also have a special 'Loved Ones Budget' that we're incredibly proud to offer, we'll tell you more about that when we speak to you!
  • We have a dedicated Remote Experience Manager in the team, who, amongst other things, will be ensuring you're happy, integrated and empowered whilst working remotely.
  • We will give you a brand new high-spec laptop when you start, giving you the choice between a Thinkpad or Mac.

Please note, we only accept candidates in Western Europe because of timezone and travel time differences. We make no exceptions (we don’t have time to!).

What you’ll get if you join us:

  • We’re in the top 14% of companies in the UK for holiday that we offer, at 36 days - so you’ll have plenty of time to rest and recharge
  • We also offer Impalans one Unsick day per year, so you can proactively look after your health (time to finally book that dentist appointment!)
  • Impala believes that great people should be able to focus on developing mastery of their skills, even if they don’t want to manage people. Here you’ll be able to access 3.5x the average annual raise, even staying in the same role.
  • We put our money where our mouth is when it comes to investing in your development - you’ll have access to a generous yearly learning budget to help you realise your potential.
  • We offer all engineers a Weekly Recess Hour. This is an hour to take off and step out from work and invest in You Time! Lawn mow, yoga, walk or movie anyone?
  • We offer an extended lunch break option, meaning you can take an extra hour lunch break, and we trust you to make up for it later in the day.
  • We offer a stipend to set up your ideal place of work. You can choose between the option of £150 per month to build out your home office, or we’ll pay for your membership at a coworking space near you up to £350.
  • In addition, we give you a special Personalised Workspace Equipment budget for things like monitors, keyboards, headphones or desk chairs.
  • You’ll travel once a quarter to meet the rest of the team in an engineer colocation week, somewhere in Europe.
  • You’ll have a Social Budget to travel to/from & stay in London for a night, for our monthly Impala Social.
  • You’ll have a generous Friend & Family Budget, to get your close friends and family over once a year.
  • We’ll organise socials around your area with other remote workers.
  • We have a Health & Wellbeing scheme in place, offering you the option of a monthly gym membership reimbursement each month, or a health food voucher each month; access to HeadspaceVitality health insurance (UK only); plus the chance to win a massage monthly. Plus loads more.
  • Perkbox. A platform designed to help you to live a better life by personalising, managing, delivering and measuring the best company perks in real-time.
  • You’ll be working somewhere that encourages collaboration, is transparent, has a strong focus on wellbeing, and doesn’t just pay lip service to it’s Core Values.

    The market, problem & vision

We live in the age of SPAM. The two main sources of it are recruiting and sales. Why can’t the good companies and good employees just find each other? Why can’t businesses just sell to happy clients?

It boils down to competition - companies fight for the best talent and for the best clients. Some throw piles of money at external agencies, some try to abuse the contacts of their staff. The SPAM is just a side-effect of a process designed to minimize the cost - but ending up inefficient and expensive in secondary costs.

Every industry veteran will tell you one thing - the best deals and the best hires are not made by ‘solutions’ - they are made by people. People with vested interest in the success of the business they work with. Today, these people are locked in a contract, bring in a ton of business and get a small cut. Or they are spammed for favors, help occasionally and get nothing for it.

And they hate it. In 2019 in the UK alone there were 8,450 new recruiting agencies started by top recruiters leaving their jobs and setting up solo or in small groups. Sales staff deals with this by doubling the churn rate compared to any other role, always hunting for a fairer commission.

On top of that, there are people who have much better access to talent than recruiters and better access to clients than sales staff - but they are left untapped. Why wouldn’t a tech company collaborate on recruiting directly with a talent pool built around an open source project? Why wouldn’t a SaaS business distribute through folks who offer training workshops in the relevant vertical?

At its core, this is a coordination problem. As a company: How do I find and on-board all these external partners? How do they learn about what I need and how do I weed through and prioritize what they send me back? How do I identify and fairly pay the ones who deliver value?

Primeflow is our answer to these questions, enabling companies to work with external partners who make recruiting and sales happen.

    The product

Primeflow enables companies to set up direct acquisition channels through scalable partnerships with external contributors. Our pilot has a mix of growth companies who look to recruit a lot, b2b businesses who want to sell through ecosystem partners and VCs who want to coordinate their startup scouts.

At the heart of Primeflow is it’s reputation engine powered by a layered dataset of:

    • demand & supply data

    • relationship linkage

    • transaction data

While managing the coordination between companies and their partners, we build a clear picture of what is being requested & delivered, between which parties and at what price.

This reputation engine powers an efficient user experience, helps the users establish new business based on their previous track record and ensures that people get rewarded based on their merit. And it’s also what will make Primeflow defendable and valuable in the long run.

    You

You are a proactive maker, hungry to build something big.

You are a versatile engineer, up to speed with modern web technologies, engineering practices & devops. You will appreciate our automatic push pipeline, have a thing to say about our system architecture and pull your weight in our stack of Angular/NodeJS/GCP.

You also want to be immersed in the product process, talk to customers, brainstorm solutions and have a voice in the direction of our product and our company.

But most importantly, you want to make stuff happen, grow personally and be rewarded fairly.
  • Heap (North American timezones)

As a product engineer at Heap, you’ll build the products that make user behavior useful for everyone.

We have a unique approach to understanding user behavior: capture all the data. This allows people to use Heap who were previously shut out from using analytics at all, so one of the core challenges of the Heap product is building a general-purpose interface that's flexible for power users but still immediately accessible for the masses.

You’ll be on a multidisciplinary team that owns the full stack from the interface to the analytical query engine. You’ll work closely with product management, design, customers, and support engineers to decide how to build features.

Our front-end stack is TypeScript, React and MobX (read more about how we write code, and how we migrated off of Backbone), but your creativity and intelligence are much more important to us than knowledge of our tools.

    What we're looking for

    • We’d particularly like to get to know you if:

    • you communicate with clarity and precision. We care about this almost as much as your technical ability.

    • you're passionate, even if it's not about analytics. There should be something you know more about than anyone on our team.

    • you’ve written 10,000 lines of code that look embarrassing in retrospect. ... and you've written 10,000 lines of good code since then.

    • you like fruit, sunshine, and bad jokes. We aren't robots.

    What you’ll work on

    • Building new core analysis features. In his second summer at Heap as an intern, Alex added a huge suite of features to all of our analysis modules.

    • Building tools to help customers manage the vast amount of data Heap capture. Even if you’re non-technical, organizing data from your website is as easy as clicking around your site.

    • Much more!

Our office is in San Francisco, but we have engineers around the world. For the product engineering team, we are open to remote engineers in North American timezones. We'd love to hear from you!

Heap has raised $95M in funding from NEA, Y Combinator, Menlo Ventures, SVAngel, Sam Altman, Garry Tan, Alexis Ohanian, Harj Taggar, Ram Shriram, and others.

  • About walrus.ai

walrus.ai is a new approach to testing and ensuring confidence in complex web applications. Through a combination of human intelligence and computer execution, we offer quick and reliable monitoring and testing from simple, plain-English instructions. Our goal is to eliminate time wasted on writing and maintaining tests across the entire stack, allowing engineers instead to focus on building products.

We are backed by great investors, and are making our first hire. This is a great opportunity to shape a company in a massive market from the ground up. There are 3 of us, and we are based in San Francisco. This position is also remote-friendly.

As our first hire, you will...

    • Work closely with the rest of the team (engineering, product, design) to define and implement new features from start to finish, with clean and well-tested code (dev-ops, server, client).

    • Build, maintain, and continuously improve our internal automation tooling to ensure quick and reliable test results for our clients.

    • Build and maintain infrastructure and monitoring such that our clients are consistently having the best possible experience.

    Our Values

    Listen First

We believe in empowering and delighting our customers. The biggest part of that is listening to them, when they’re happy, and when they’re frustrated. Before making any hard decision, listen to different points of view, collect as much insight as possible, and move forward with conviction. Don’t bring the ego in the building.

    Always learn

“A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.”

    — Mark Twain

Failure is embraced, as long as you learn something from it.

We believe in curiosity, and first-principles reasoning. All ideas are welcome, and debate is embraced. We aim for clarity of thought, and collecting diverse points of view, from our team, and our customers.

    Keep it simple

“Stock is the backbone of good cooking, just roast some bones, roast some vegetables, put them in a big pot with water, and reduce and reduce and reduce.”

    — Anthony Bourdain

Whether cooking, writing a book, or managing your workload, boiling ideas down to their essence, and bringing elegant simplicity to complex systems are the backbones of operational excellence.

    Engineering Qualifications

    • 2+ years of engineering experience in a consumer or enterprise software company.

    • Proficient in front-end technologies, being familiar with the DOM and how to interact with it.

    • Capable of diving into backend code to write new features from top to bottom.

    • BS in computer science or related field, or relevant work experience.

    Bonuses:

    • Browser automation experience (Puppeteer, Selenium, Cypress)

    • Experience with ReactJS

    Personal Qualities

    • You understand, and care deeply about the ramifications of the code you write, on the customer, and on the business.

    • You think from first-principles.

    • You are comfortable with the ambiguity and pace of iteration of an early-stage startup.

    • You are resourceful and will do whatever to deliver delightful customer experiences.

    • You have strong opinions, but are open to changing your mind.

    • You believe that a steeper slope makes up for a lot of y-intercept.

    Sound like you?

Please reach out to us, and one of the co-founders will get back to you ASAP. We look forward to hearing from you!
