  • Overview

Retrium is a seed-funded startup that helps teams improve their Agile processes by facilitating effective and engaging retrospective meetings. With over 85,000 retrospectives run on our platform, we’re the trusted leader in our market, and we’ve been helping teams continuously improve since 2015.

We’re also a small, cross-functional team of passionate and fun people. We have an outstanding leadership team and a dedication to company culture, so you’ll always feel connected to our mission, even though you can work from anywhere. We’re lucky enough to have an awesome product, great revenue growth, high customer satisfaction, low churn, and a recent round of seed investment. Now, we need someone to help us take our product to the next level!

The right candidate for the Senior Product Designer position at Retrium is someone who has experience in a product-led organization, can translate complex customer problems into elegant solutions, understands best practices for user interface design, and likes to iterate based on research findings and customer feedback. If you’re a creative problem-solver and want to create a compelling experience for thousands of users, then come be a part of our growing team!

    Responsibilities

As the first dedicated product designer at Retrium, you’ll help us establish the design processes we’ll use going forward. This means you’ll need to understand the business context, customers, and technical constraints and their impact on design in addition to being a great designer. You’ll work closely with both the engineering and business teams to advocate for design in strategic product decisions and oversee the UI design implementation, so communication and collaboration will be key in this role.

Because you’ll own everything related to design, you’ll need to be well versed in customer research, so that you can share your concepts and get feedback from our users. You’ll translate our product’s mission and these customer research insights into an engaging and simple interface for our retrospective platform. In this role, your goal will be to continuously improve the user experience of our application, so that customers can easily adopt, understand, and interact with our product.

Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for creating mockups, user flows, sketches, wireframes, diagrams, customer journey maps, and other design artifacts needed to guide the product development process. The ability to take ideas from low-fidelity outlines to high-fidelity designs using Sketch, Invision, Figma, Framer, or other relevant tooling, is a big part of this role.

Because our core values include “Default to Autonomy”, “Bias for Action”, and “Level Up”, you’ll need to be a self-starter who can brainstorm possibilities, execute tasks, and lead the implementation of major features and changes to the product. If you want a job that’s integral to a company’s expansion and growth and where there’s opportunities to learn and make a real impact, then this role is for you!

    Skillset

More than anything else, we’re looking for a self-motivated person who is passionate about designing a great user experience within Retrium.

We believe that the following collection of experiences and abilities would make someone successful in this position. However, we encourage anyone with 5 or more years of professional experience as a Product Designer, UX Designer, or Front-End Engineer to apply.

    - A portfolio of relevant design work that you’re proud to share that includes digital products, not just websites

    - A history of successfully shipping products and collaborating cross-functionally with both software engineers and business stakeholders

    - The passion and drive to learn about Retrium and our customers

    - A growth mindset with an openness to feedback, learning, and experimentation

    - Experience with Agile software development processes, from problem definition through to detailed UI and visual design

    - Experience designing a B2B SaaS product is strongly preferred

    - Experience in a distributed team and/or high-growth startup would be helpful

    Benefits

We provide amazing benefits, and if you ask the team, they’ll tell you that the greatest benefits we offer employees are the ability to make a meaningful contribution to the company and the opportunities to “Listen. Learn. Teach”, another core value.

    Our other benefits include:

    - Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing, funded startup

    - Health, dental, and vision insurance coverage for you and your family

    - Unlimited and minimum vacation policy (we encourage you to ask us about this!)

    - Flexible, sustainable work hours

    - Work from home or a co-working office

    - All the equipment you need to do your job

    - Continuing education and learning opportunities

    - Annual company retreats

    Additional Information

Retrium is committed to creating a diverse environment where you can “Be Your Amazing Self”, yet another core value. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

    Remote

This Product Designer position for our Plan stage group is 100% remote.

    A brief overview:

GitLab is building an open source, single application for the entire software development lifecycle—from project planning and source code management to CI/CD, monitoring, and security.

We started 2019 with a team of 15 Product Designers and Researchers. Right now, we’re in a period of growth, we’ve more than doubled the size of the Product Design team, and we’re increasing the number of GitLab employees to over 1000 this financial year, too.

At GitLab, we live and breathe open source principles. This means our entire handbook is online, and with a few clicks, you can find the details of future releases, the maturity of our different product categories, check out the details of our past releases, and see an overview of the product vision you’d contribute to when working here.

As a Product Designer at GitLab, you will be embedded in our Plan stage group. It’s a highly visible area, where you’ll be tasked with improving the experience of our planning tools, enabling our users to manage issues, track their time, and effectively manage their workflow with a tool that adapts to their needs and development processes.

What you can expect in a Product Designer, Plan role at GitLab:

    • You’ll make the experience of using GitLab's Plan features better. Initially, you'll be tasked with improving how Epics work, how our plan features integrate with 3rd party tools like Jira, and building in charts so users can track burndown and time more effectively.
    • You'll work alongside Product Managers to define and shape our Plan product while enabling our future-focused strategy.
    • You’ll work alongside UX Researchers, Plan other Product Designers, and Engineers to iterate on new user journeys within the GitLab product.
    • You’ll utilize wireframes, prototypes, user flows, mockups, hi-fidelity visual designs, or any other artifacts you believe are necessary to convey your design thinking and ideas
    • You’ll engage with our user base and the wider GitLab community to understand their pain points and work toward long-term fixes that enable them to succeed with their goals.
    • You’ll undertake usability testing to validate your thinking, collaborate with our UX Researchers on generative research, and you’ll share findings with the wider team in our research repo, ensuring recommendations are communicated effectively across our organization.
    • You’ll contribute to our Design System, alongside the rest of the UX team, and the GitLab community as a whole.

Projects you might work on in our Plan stage group:

You’ll spend your time collaborating with a cross-functional team, helping build out our time tracking features, kanban boards, and issue tracking tooling. You’ll also contribute to our Pajamas design system.

    You should apply if:

    • You’ve got experience designing developer tooling or complex web applications that are built for highly-technical users.
    • You’ve got some experience working as a Product Designer on project management, planning, or workflow management software.
    • You’ve got experience working on product strategy and product design for a complex enterprise application or SaaS tool.
    • You enjoy getting involved in research and usability testing, and you continually look to improve your user research abilities.
    • You want to design for a complex product with technical users who have continually evolving needs.
    • You’ve got a portfolio of work that shows us your product design skills across user research, UX strategy, wireframing, prototyping, product strategy, and visual design, within a complex domain.
    • The idea of playing a key part in the evolution of our Pajamas Design System is truly exciting to you.
    • You understand frontend code or the limitations of frontend technology. You can demonstrate this through your hands-on coding skills with HTML/CSS/JS, or by showing us you have a deep understanding of the needs of engineers you’ve worked with previously.
    • Our values of collaboration, results, efficiency, diversity, iteration, and transparency resonate with you.

What it’s like to work here at GitLab:

The culture here at GitLab is something we’re incredibly proud of. Because GitLabbers are currently located in over 51 different countries, you’ll spend your time collaborating with kind, talented, and motivated colleagues from across the globe. Some of the benefits you’ll be entitled to vary by the region or country you’re in. However, all GitLabbers are fully remote and receive a "no ask, must tell" paid-time-off policy, where we don’t count the number of days you take off annually. You can work incredibly flexible hours, enabled by our asynchronous approach to communication. We’ll also help you set up your home office environment, pay for your membership to a co-working space and contribute to the travel costs associated with meeting other GitLab employees across the world. Also, every year or so, we’ll invite you to our Contribute event. Our hiring process for this Senior Product Designer position typically follows five stages. The details of this process and the compensation for this role can be found at the bottom of our job family page.
