Frontastic is looking for a UI/UX/Frontend Engineer (f/m/*) as either part-time or full-time position. We are a remote-first company currently operating in the Europe/Berlin timezone. Locations in or close to Germany are preferred to make our regular in-person meetings easier.

As our first dedicated frontend engineer you will have the opportunity to be a major influence on our product UI/UX and bring a balance of opinion to our team of backend engineers.

This is not a junior position, but if you are experienced and ship proven work on your own, this position is for you. You can set new standards in the eCommerce experience: You develop our progressive web application platform with innovative UI components, build and integrate standards for others to develop their eCommerce projects on top of your work.

    THIS MEANS

    • Implementation of basic UI patterns & new ideas for eCommerce projects

    • Development of frontend components with React & React-Redux

    • Styling with SASS & CSS using BEM / BEMIT and patterns from ITCSS

    • Development of a mobile-first progressive web app platform

    • Integration of different backend services via APIs

    YOU BRING

Good knowledge of JavaScript & React or SASS & CSS. Experiences with Webpack, PHP (Symfony 4), Ansible, CouchDB or MySQL are a bonus. You are a proficient speaker and writer of English – additional languages are always helpful. You have already gained experience in IT companies and can structure requirements and challenges, communicate and implement them in a targeted manner.

You are motivated to work from your home office or a co-working space and able to structure your work day accordingly. That’s what makes you special:

    • You would describe yourself more as a generalist than a specialist in your field

    • You are highly motivated, committed to improving existing skills and like to learn new skills during working hours

    • You have a vision of how to better shape the development experience for other frontend engineers.

    • You have a completed education and at least 3 to 5 years of professional experience as an application developer or in a comparable field.

    • Knowledge of JavaScript, React, SASS, CSS & HTML

    • An understanding of the requirements of working in software development (quality assurance, testing, cross-browser development)

    • You are able and willing to prefer written communication to make well structured information readily available to everyone and follow established communication patterns

    WHAT WE OFFER

As our colleague you have the flexibility to choose your own working hours throughout the day to incorporate this job into your life-work balance. Our work week has 40 hours maximum and overtime is the exception. No vacation days are necessary to run errands, and there is certainly no need to wait until after work to take care of a family emergency.

Our development team strives to improve themselves following these guidelines:

    • A culture of owning your code from design & development to deployment and monitoring, which is sometimes called DevOps.

    • We offer a friendly learning environment and try hard not to blame anyone for not knowing something and actively encourage mentoring of your peers.

    • We use practices like pair programming, mob programming, test driven development when it makes sense and continuously refactor our code to constantly share knowledge and keep the amount of technical dept low.

    • We are a remote-first company with regular meetings in-person. We use tools like Email, Trello, Hangouts and Slack to stay in touch during our daily work.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. If we receive job applications from yet underrepresented groups those applications will be preferred.

    COMPENSATION

For this particular job we are offering to pay between 40.000 € to 70.000 € based on experience and skills. Optionally you can get Virtual Shares from our Virtual Shares Options Program (VSOP) as part of your compensation.

  • Overview

Retrium is a seed-funded startup that helps teams improve their Agile processes by facilitating effective and engaging retrospective meetings. With over 85,000 retrospectives run on our platform, we’re the trusted leader in our market, and we’ve been helping teams continuously improve since 2015.

We’re also a small, cross-functional team of passionate and fun people. We have an outstanding leadership team and a dedication to company culture, so you’ll always feel connected to our mission, even though you can work from anywhere. We’re lucky enough to have an awesome product, great revenue growth, high customer satisfaction, low churn, and a recent round of seed investment. Now, we need someone to help us take our product to the next level!

The right candidate for the Senior Product Designer position at Retrium is someone who has experience in a product-led organization, can translate complex customer problems into elegant solutions, understands best practices for user interface design, and likes to iterate based on research findings and customer feedback. If you’re a creative problem-solver and want to create a compelling experience for thousands of users, then come be a part of our growing team!

    Responsibilities

As the first dedicated product designer at Retrium, you’ll help us establish the design processes we’ll use going forward. This means you’ll need to understand the business context, customers, and technical constraints and their impact on design in addition to being a great designer. You’ll work closely with both the engineering and business teams to advocate for design in strategic product decisions and oversee the UI design implementation, so communication and collaboration will be key in this role.

Because you’ll own everything related to design, you’ll need to be well versed in customer research, so that you can share your concepts and get feedback from our users. You’ll translate our product’s mission and these customer research insights into an engaging and simple interface for our retrospective platform. In this role, your goal will be to continuously improve the user experience of our application, so that customers can easily adopt, understand, and interact with our product.

Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for creating mockups, user flows, sketches, wireframes, diagrams, customer journey maps, and other design artifacts needed to guide the product development process. The ability to take ideas from low-fidelity outlines to high-fidelity designs using Sketch, Invision, Figma, Framer, or other relevant tooling, is a big part of this role.

Because our core values include “Default to Autonomy”, “Bias for Action”, and “Level Up”, you’ll need to be a self-starter who can brainstorm possibilities, execute tasks, and lead the implementation of major features and changes to the product. If you want a job that’s integral to a company’s expansion and growth and where there’s opportunities to learn and make a real impact, then this role is for you!

    Skillset

More than anything else, we’re looking for a self-motivated person who is passionate about designing a great user experience within Retrium.

We believe that the following collection of experiences and abilities would make someone successful in this position. However, we encourage anyone with 5 or more years of professional experience as a Product Designer, UX Designer, or Front-End Engineer to apply.

    - A portfolio of relevant design work that you’re proud to share that includes digital products, not just websites

    - A history of successfully shipping products and collaborating cross-functionally with both software engineers and business stakeholders

    - The passion and drive to learn about Retrium and our customers

    - A growth mindset with an openness to feedback, learning, and experimentation

    - Experience with Agile software development processes, from problem definition through to detailed UI and visual design

    - Experience designing a B2B SaaS product is strongly preferred

    - Experience in a distributed team and/or high-growth startup would be helpful

    Benefits

We provide amazing benefits, and if you ask the team, they’ll tell you that the greatest benefits we offer employees are the ability to make a meaningful contribution to the company and the opportunities to “Listen. Learn. Teach”, another core value.

    Our other benefits include:

    - Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing, funded startup

    - Health, dental, and vision insurance coverage for you and your family

    - Unlimited and minimum vacation policy (we encourage you to ask us about this!)

    - Flexible, sustainable work hours

    - Work from home or a co-working office

    - All the equipment you need to do your job

    - Continuing education and learning opportunities

    - Annual company retreats

    Additional Information

Retrium is committed to creating a diverse environment where you can “Be Your Amazing Self”, yet another core value. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
