TaxJar’s remote-only team of 140+ people is growing quickly. We have an immediate opening for a Senior Product Designer who wants to make ecommerce easier for small and medium businesses.

The design team at TaxJar is solving complex problems on a daily basis, supporting our growing customer base and creating new solutions in a complex domain. We deal with large datasets, complex frequently-changing sales tax rules, and automating complex processes for thousands of business customers. Our success is dependent on translating these complex problems into elegant experiences that delight our customers. We pride ourselves in rethinking established paradigms and bringing new and innovative solutions into existence in the financial space.

*This is a full-time remote position, available to folks located in the US.

Qualifications

  • A passion for turning complex problems into simple and engaging experiences

  • A comprehensive understanding of the end to end iterative design process: research user needs, map user journeys, wireframe, prototype, conduct usability testing

  • Experience working independently and with remote teams

  • Experience as a primary contributor to multiple high impact projects

Requirements

  • 7+ years experience with SaaS products

  • Passion for solving core product problems while being accountable for all facets of the user experience: from strategy to research to interaction design

  • Ability to rapidly prototype and validate the team's design efforts

  • Front-end experience with HTML, CSS / Sass, JavaScript (Vue.js / React) a strong plus, though not required

  • Comfort with writing clear, concise UI copy

  • Develop a design system to cultivate a coherent look and feel across the product

  • A portfolio that demonstrates the ability to design complex workflows and data heavy applications

    About the Role

    This is a fully remote role, we will consider applicants based in North America, South America and EMEA.

    Kraken is expanding our Product Design team for Cryptowatch.  The company is comprised of experienced and motivated veterans of the technology, design, and finance industries.  We are building sophisticated crypto-trading products while having fun along the way.  Come help us continue to define and lead this exciting industry.

    We are looking for a creative and motivated self-starter with attention to detail and an eye for beautiful, clean user interfaces.  A UI designer who can produce end-to-end intuitive interfaces that connect the design workflow with product goals. From from mapping user journeys into flow diagrams, creating wireframes to high fidelity mockups, and providing clear direction for development teams implementing designs into front-end code.  

    You consider the user experience first and support design decisions with best practices and data from usability tests or site metrics. You'll be a key member of the design team, collaborating closely with the very best engineers, designers, business leadership, partners and customers in the industry. You will take a leading role defining key Cryptowatch features while applying best practices throughout the product.

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with designers, product managers, engineers and stakeholders to deliver end-to-end product experiences

    • Apply business objectives into concepts creating flows, wireframes, and mockups of intuitive user experiences

    • Distill and visualize complex data sets and attributes into summarizing views

    • Incorporate pattern-based solutions across web-based platforms, from wide-screen to mobile

    • Define, create, and improve the tools and processes that accelerate workflows for other designers and developers

    • Translate mockups into reusable components within a Figma design system

    • Prototype and iterate designs to connect and optimize user flows

    • Demonstrate proficiency communicating throughout the design process from formulating high-level strategy to executing pixel-perfect mockups

    Requirements

    • At least 4 years of product design experience

    • Strong portfolio of latest relevant work

    • Solid understanding of user-centered design and UX principles

    • Expert-level creation of user interface across devices

    • Experience with component-based design tools such as Sketch or Figma

    • Creative idea generator with a problem solving mindset

    • Ability to receive constructive criticism to ultimately improve the end result

    • Willing to take initiative and ownership of tasks and deliverables

    • Understanding of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency movement

    • Proficiency designing for finance, charting, trading, or data dense applications

    What are we looking for

    A Product Designer able to craft the correct design and UI/UX decisions in an agile way.

    What you will do

    A Design Director at MetaLab owns the big picture of our design work, and is responsible for overall quality while ensuring the team executing the work is set up for success. Things in our world are constantly changing so you must be fast, highly adaptive, and comfortable with ambiguity. You’ll collaborate with the other Design Directors, the leadership team, People Ops, Resourcing, and Design Leads to support the domain of design at MetaLab. Externally, you’ll serve as a face of our design team in front of clients so an ability to listen well, communicate clearly and command a room is a must. Above all else, you have an eye for exceptional design and the ability to motivate teams to strive for the highest quality work.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Co-Manage a +40-person design team and mentor our Design Leads.
    • Drive the overall Design team’s operations and strategy.
    • Collaborate with the Client Partnerships team to pitch engagements to clients.
    • Assist in scoping out the timeline and requirements of design engagements.
    • Involved in vetting, hiring, and training new members of the design team.
    • Advocate for the design team internally to make sure they’re set up for success
    • Collaborate with the rest of MetaLab’s leadership team to keep company engagement high.
    • Articulate constructive feedback, and ensure the design team is evaluated and supported on an ongoing basis.
    • Foster an open, collaborative, and inclusive environment for the design team.
    • Roll up your sleeves in the work, providing guidance and direction to several project teams simultaneously.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Interacts with the design team in-person and online on a daily basis, and with clients when needed.
    • Ability to travel to client meetings.
    • Can work remotely but face time is important, whether that's video calls or occasional office visits.

    WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

    • Strength in leading, mentoring, and coaching a product design team. You have previously led a team of product designers.
    • Strong understanding of product design.
    • Expert-level experience leading teams in UI/UX design. Familiar with all the common designer tools such as Sketch, Principle, Invision, etc.
    • Ability to present designs to clients with credibility, clarity, and confidence.
    • Well versed in facilitation techniques that enable groups to build clarity and alignment.
    • Understanding of product management and product life-cycles. You’ve led teams building digital projects from scratch before.
    • Not an asshole—please leave your ego at the door.
    • Ability to be both a leader, listener, and a mentor for more junior designers. You can actively build the skills of team members to make them more successful in their careers.
    • Be active in the design community, representing MetaLab and attracting new talent.
    • Ideally, you're within +/- 3 hours of the Pacific timezone.
