We're a remote startup founded by 3 British people with team members based in London, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Geneva and Malaga.

We're looking for a stunningly talented, product-minded UX designer who gets what we're doing and can't wait to get started.

THE JOB:

  • Full time (we can consider part-time though)

  • Remote, as long as your time zone is within 2 hours of the UK

  • Awesome company culture and amazing people

YOU'LL:

  • Conceive of, create, and design new app features - all the way from idea to mock-up to design

  • Specify features for developers to implement them, or build them yourself using our no code app builder

  • Curate a consistent design system

  • Be at the cutting edge of UX and make all of Stacker feel like magic

  • Design landing pages for new iterations of the Stacker product

YOU HAVE:

  • Insanely high attention to detail

  • Intuitive knowledge of what makes great UX

  • A track record of making beautiful interfaces

  • The ability to understand the bigger picture of what we're doing and work towards it

  • Knowledge of CSS

  • An internet connection that can easily handle video calls

  • A passion for what we're making!

YOU MUST:

  • Be in a time zone that's +/-2 hours from British time all year round

    The Product department at the Foundation is looking for a Senior UX Designer to join our Product Design team. This role will directly support the Foundation’s Structured Data on Commons work which is made possible by a grant from the Sloan Foundation. This team focuses on making the millions of files on Wikimedia Commons easier to view, search (also multilingually), edit, organize and re-use, and as such is a key strategic initiative for the Product team. 

    As the SDC team’s designer, you will be responsible for developing design concepts, testing and evaluating these concepts, and engaging in “community conversations” with stakeholders in the Wikimedia Commons contributor community to gather insights and surface concerns. As part of the Product Design team at the Foundation, you will contribute in weekly design review sessions, and mentor other designers as needed.

    Responsibilities 

    Design

    • Understand audience behaviour and create experiments to test hypotheses 
    • Shepherd features from ideas on paper through to implementation
    • Use evaluative and generative research to inform your design decisions
    • Reduce, simplify and distill

    Collaborate

    • Collaborate with product and engineering leads to establish and maintain product design processes
    • Interact with our users and communities from the beginning to end of your design process
    • Work with our growing team of designers to create reusable design patterns
    • Be an active part of the development team throughout the product process

    Advocate

    • Distill complex concepts into simple, easy to understand talking points to effectively articulate your vision to your team and the communities
    • Develop clear and effective communications that are compelling and convincing
    • Be the voice of design in developing product plans

     Requirements

    • Have great instincts for making design decisions and be able to support your choices with research and data
    • Being able to perform evaluative research
    • Be able to tell stories that convey your design goals to team members and internal stakeholders
    • Have a creative vision of your own while being able to work within the bounds of what is possible, and imagine what can come next
    • 5+ years of experience contributing on product design teams
    • Know when to switch from blue sky ideation to tactical thinking
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in related work experience
    • Be self-driven and comfortable working autonomously


    Pluses

    In addition to the basic skills needed for being successful, these skills could set you apart from the pack!

    • Passion for participatory (vs. only consumption) experiences on the web
    • Background in content consumption, publishing, education, or news
    • Experience working on offline digital experiences
    • Experience acting as a researcher, both in-person and with remote participants
    • Have familiarity with Free Knowledge and/or Open Source communities
    • Speak more than one of the 286 languages of the users you’ll be designing for

    We are seeking a UX designer with an expertise in visual design. In this role, the UX Visual Designer brings a deeper knowledge of visual design principles, practices, pattern libraries, accessibility web standards, and can collaborate effectively with software engineers to deliver working software. We are also looking for someone who is passionate about developing digital services for large federal and state government agencies, and the people they serve.

    Location

    Our team is almost entirely distributed (remote) across the US. For this position, you can normally work from home or find a great co-working space, although occasional on-site visits and working sessions with clients will be necessary.     What you’ll do

    • Create and/or leverage existing design patterns that meet both user, business and technical needs.

    • Demonstrate and teach government agencies human-centered design, lean and agile methodologies.

    • Communicate design decisions and what user problem they are solving verbally or visually.

    • Help facilitate client discovery workshops, user research and synthesis.

    What we expect you to bring

    • Minimum of 3 years experience in software, web and/or mobile visual design.

    • Minimum of 2 years working in an agile/scrum/lean methodologies environment.

    • You are well-versed in all aspects of current visual design standards and trends and will be responsible for managing project design reviews and execution for all visual project work.

    • Openness to diversity and working with people from different socio economic and cultural backgrounds.

    • Knowledge in accessibility web standards and interaction patterns.

    • Can manage complex projects and stakeholder relationships.

    • You are up-to-date on the latest software tools and trends. This could be using tools such as: Sketch, Invision, Figma, Zeplin, and some HTML/CSS/JS, etc.

    • You have a portfolio that demonstrates ability to design compelling visual experiences and user interfaces around business, user, and technology requirements.

    • You have experience working with data visualization and data-driven storytelling through design.

    • Excitement and generosity of spirit in sharing your skills to help build a growing UX practice.

    • This position will include infrequent travel to clients. 

    Salary Range

    • $90,000 - $115,000 USD per Year

    • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
