About us

Careful Industries work understands and anticipates the social impacts of technology. Our mission for 2021 is to make sure more people have the chance to shape, inform and create new technologies.

We research and analyse the social impact of technologies and technology policies; forecast possible futures; and design and deliver technology policy, governance and training solutions that centre equity and social justice.

Our work often involves navigating change and ambiguity, so no two projects are the same: we bring a combination of multi-disciplinary research, horizon scanning, communications expertise, strong networks, and practical technology experience.

Careful Industries is a microbusiness based in the UK, run by Rachel Coldicutt. We run our own projects (funded and unfunded) and also take commissions from clients. We’re a small organization that will grow over the next year.

We have a plan for gentle growth in 2021 and are looking for our first team member, a proven operational expert with a growth mindset to be our Operations Manager.

 
The role

Operations

Manage and offer strategic input on proposals and pipeline. Providing analytical support for projects, system implementations, market expansions, geographical expansions, new business opportunities, and proposals

Work with and manage relevant 3rd party suppliers, including Accountants, HR, and Solicitors, placing purchase orders and chasing suppliers on status updates and delivery dates

Manage logistics and tools for remote working (including Slack, Airtable, G Suite, and others as needed) as the team grows to ensure that the operational side of the business is efficiently meeting the needs of the rest of the team.

Oversee the set-up of our not-for-profit arm.

Manage project forecasting and ensure progress and velocity is effectively reported and shared across teams.

Have an active approach to problem solving and an ability to act quickly and effectively to address any challenges that arise.

Ensure our Data Protection policy is successfully implemented.

 

People

Proven experience with the skills to lead and motivate a small team of 3-4 over the year and manage a freelance roster

Provide end to end administration support for the recruitment and onboarding process, including posting roles, candidate management, supporting hiring managers including booking interviews and induction meeting and ensuring new employees are day one ready

Wellbeing for Staff and Freelancers. Create, maintain and foster a safe and team-based work environment to develop and execute on process improvements

Ensure company values and commitment to building a great place to work are at the heart of everything we do

Ensure company values are accurately reflected in the Staff Handbook and policies, and update these as needed.

Handle ad hoc requests to support growing business

 

Finance

The ability to deliver financial results at an operational level

Financial cash flow management across both the business and related not-for-profit organisation, using Free agent in the first instance

Provide reporting on daily, weekly and monthly key performance and quality metrics to leaders and hold individuals accountable

Establish and manage an operations budget

 

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have experience of:

  • Operational management in a small organisation or start-up
  • Financial management and forecasting for a small organisation or start-up
  • Growing and recruiting a team
  • Comfortable with both not-for-profit funding/grant applications and business development
  • Developing new relationships and advising others
  • The ability to challenge, solve problems, and deliver efficiently

 

And also

  • Be comfortable working remotely, and able to support the growth of a fully remote organisation
  • Be familiar with and comfortable administering and using cloud collaboration tools including Slack and Airtable
  • Be willing to solve big and small problems as they arise
  • Have an interest in the mission and vision of Careful Industries

 

Benefits

This is a part-time role: 2.5 days per week. Salary is £50,000 pa (pro rated, so £25,000).

Flexible working welcomed

Remote working from anywhere in the UK

25 days’ holiday (pro-rated) as well as Bank Holidays and the time between Christmas and New Year

£1500 working from home allowance for kit (to include a laptop)
