About this Role

You'll work directly with a technical team of senior software engineers, and the company's founders, to ensure that the usability of the company's developer tools remains at the highest industry standard. As the company's lead technical writer, you will be responsible for creating documentation that effectively turns non-blockchain developers into smart contract developers, while also providing experienced smart contract developers with the documentation they’ll use to build next generation decentralized applications.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with engineering, product and marketing teams about the design and implementation of Chainlink’s software

  • Design, write, and update user guides, developer documentation, API references, and sample code

  • Contribute to tools and processes that make documentation and software development more efficient, scalable, and collaborative

Requirements

  • Experience writing concise technical documentation for high quality developer tools

  • Ability to simplify complex technical systems in writing, and visually with diagrams

  • Familiarity with JavaScript, Golang, Rust and/or Solidity

  • Ability to take full ownership of the success of the company’s technical documentation

  • Familiarity with web standards, APIs, and other Web 2.0 technologies

  • A genuine interest in cryptocurrency, blockchains and other Web 3.0 technologies

  • Strong understanding of technical concepts, analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to operate independently and take on additional responsibilities as needed

  • Comfort and/or experience with remote work

  • Open to contract and part-time

This role is location agnostic anywhere in the world. Though we ask that you overlap some working hours with Eastern Standard Time (EST).

  • This Senior Manager, Technical Writing position is 100% remote.

    GitLab is building an open-source, single application for the entire software development lifecycle—from project planning and source code management to CI/CD, monitoring, and security.

    Right now, we’re in a period of growth, we’ve more than tripled the size of the Technical Writing team over the last year and we’re increasing the number of GitLab employees to over 2,000 this financial year, too.

    As a Senior Manager, Technical Writing at GitLab, you will be responsible for growing and managing a team of talented Technical Writing Managers. Each of these Technical Writing Managers oversees a team of Technical Writers who are embedded in cross-functional, stage group teams. We follow a Git-based, docs-as-code workflow, adopting a Docs-first methodology in our documentation practices. The work you will oversee will be impactful and highly visible to millions of our users across the globe.

    What you can expect in a Senior Manager, Technical Writing role at GitLab:

    • You’ll advocate for good documentation practices, continually looking to improve the workflow of Technical Writing Managers and Technical Writers, while ensuring our docs-first methodology is visible across our engineering and product function.
    • You’ll create space for collaboration within our Technical Writing team.
    • You’ll foster deep relationships between Technical Writing, UX, Product, Customer Support, Engineering, and other cross-functional partners.
    • You’ll work with your direct reports to build out a documentation strategy for their respective stage groups.
    • You’ll build out a career development plan for Technical Writers and Technical Writing Managers.
    • Your approach to management should be informed by our view on what is required of a Manager at GitLab. Here, we default to asynchronous communication, so your management style will need to work in the context of our all-remote, global team.
    • You’ll collaborate with our UX Director to define OKRs for our documentation practice. These OKRs will shape your team’s process, define your responsibilities as a manager, and feed into the responsibilities of your direct reports.

    About the Team:

    This small, diverse team focuses on solving customer problems through the design and development of innovative first-party integrations between InVision and external vendors. We focus on delivering a delightful, best-in-class user experience as we build solutions that enable our customers to seamlessly connect their InVision assets to the tools they use every day. We solve tough problems, creatively and collaboratively, with just about every other engineering team at InVision, resulting in quite a bit of interesting variety in our work.     What you’ll do:

    • Lead efforts in developing robust solutions to interesting problems that utilize TypeScript, React, and Golang microservices
    • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders to help drive, and balance priorities
    • Help drive technical initiatives by proactively visualizing and understanding the needs of the software
    • Lead code reviews and guide software architecture decisions for your team
    • Actively work to understand and implement initiatives to drive quality such as stability, performance, and clean code
    • Influence technology decisions across InVision
    • Mentor other engineers on the team and support their career development

    What you’ll bring: 

    • 7+ years of software development experience delivering solutions that are high quality, scalable, maintainable, and performant
    • Extensive front end experience with JavaScript (Typescript) and React
    • Experience with Golang is highly desirable 
    • Multiple years of experience mentoring and leading experienced engineers
    • Experience leveraging 3rd party APIs to build integrations between disparate products
    • Solid understanding of cross-process interactions (either app to app or app to distributed service)
    • Ability to define and solve unconstrained problems and know when to seek help
    • A knack for leading technical teams, building consensus and influencing technical decisions 
    • One or more degrees in computer science or a related field, and/or equivalent work experience
