We are looking for an experienced data engineer to be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of large data collection and processing systems at Brave. This position will focus on scaling our backend systems to handle the increased load of data collection, processing and presentation.

Responsibilities:

  • The position would primarily work with the statistics and engineering teams, along with day to day communication with the product and marketing team.

  • Design and develop AWS systems to collect and manage business events at scale.

  • Respond to request from the product, engineering and marketing team for timely data analysis.

  • Participate in multi-team planning for future data collection needs.

Requirements:

  • Strong AWS skills with extensive knowledge of the data collection, storage and processing systems that AWS provides. Experience building ETL pipelines at scale.

  • Familiarity with Redshift, Kinesis, Athena, Glue, Data Pipeline, MongoDB, Postgresql.

  • Strong JavaScript and SQL skills.

  • Extensive knowledge of modern open source software develop practices and tools i.e. Git, Github, Unit and integration testing, pull requests, code review etc…

    The Role:

    Fitbit is an engineering driven company with a focus on providing a great, consistent, and continuously available user experience. Our customers are uploading their tracking data and viewing their stats all the time, so site performance is critical to customer satisfaction. We're looking for someone to join our Infrastructure Engineering organization to help us build new services and evolve our existing platform.

    You'll work on challenging technical problems that support hundreds of engineers and hundreds of millions of Fitbit's customers. You'll develop and design software automation and tooling to drive efficiencies and help us scale core infrastructure that our key services are built upon.

    What You'll Work With:

    Our tooling for Infrastructure Engineering is largely written in Python and Go. However, there are some opportunities to work with Java if you're collaborating outside of the team.

    On a daily basis, this team is building tools and supporting infrastructure with: Terraform, Vault, Docker, Kubernetes, Aurora/Mesos, and Prometheus.

    An excellent candidate will demonstrate existing knowledge in a number of the tools we use as well as an ability to both teach others and learn new skills.

    It Would Be Great if You Have:

    • Significant experience (4+ years) in working with scalable public clouds like AWS or GCP.

    • Proficiency in programming and testing Go or Python.

    • Strong understanding of Linux systems and containers.

    • Previous experience in Kubernetes, Aurora/Mesos, Terraform, Bazel, or Vault.

    • An understanding of security principles and ability to work with InfoSec to address vulnerabilities and collaborate on future changes.

    • Demonstrated skill in automating operational needs and developing tools at scale.

    • A history of thorough documentation.

    • The ability to coordinate and communicate effectively whether it's emails, documentation, or video conferencing.

    • Worked with remote teams before.

    Skills and Experience

    • 3+ years experience in a Data Architect role as part of a team
    • You have a track record of leading data architecture initiatives to completion
    • You have experience analysing, reasoning about, optimising and implementing complex data systems
    • You have expertise in data handling approaches and technologies with good understanding of system development lifecycles and modern data architectures(Data Lakes, Data Warehouse)
    • You are comfortable modeling complex systems using approaches such as Domain Driven Design, eventual consistency, stream processing
    • You have experience with a diverse set of data storage and persistence frameworks and have a strong understanding of core data modelling concepts:
      • Relational & distributed databases (e.g. MySQL, Cassandra, Neo4j, Riak, HBase, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch)
      • Consistency trade-offs and transactional algorithms in distributed systems
      • Principles of fault tolerance and robustness
    • Use the best available tools & languages for each task. Currently we work a lot with Node.js but also use other tools and languages like Go, Python, Java, C, C++ and PHP where it makes sense. 
    • You have experience working with data streaming and pipelining systems(Hadoop, Kafka, Druid)
    • You have experience working with an engineering team, and communicate effectively with other stakeholders.
    • You have a track record of combining a solid long-term architectural strategy with short-term progress.
    • With freedom comes responsibility. You direct your own work and are pro-active in asking for input.
    • You have a scientific mindset and empirically test your hypotheses.
    • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
