You will: 

  • Identify and analyze trends or patterns in complex data sets

  • Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that improve statistical efficiency and quality

  • Filter and “clean” data by reviewing multiple data sources and performance indicators to locate and correct inconsistencies.

  • Support scoping complex data-centric projects across multiple teams and systems, and work on deliverables to promote bias to action

  • Build data models to accelerate the business by providing deeper insights into visitor and customer behaviors, and feed the team’s hunger for actionable insights

  • Assist our teams in defining, tracking and optimizing processes, tools, and dashboards for better planning and management of the business

  • Help analyze the effectiveness of new solutions to inform whether to double down, pivot, or eliminate a new feature or process

  • Select and integrate new technologies to promote better segmentation and attribution


  • Experience in analytics/data science or a directly related field – some of which is in a technology environment

  • Experience initiating and delivering applicable analyses/recommendations to guide impact

  • Excellent skills with analytics tools, fluency with BI/visualization tools such as Mode, Tableau, etc and knowledge of Excel, R, Python, SQL, or other analysis tools

  • An understanding of SaaS business models and essential metrics

  • Experience implementing and integrating an event tracking platform

  • Critical-reasoning skills, including the understanding of common pitfalls of data analysis

  • A desire to work in a respectful, transparent, and transparent work environment, following Hotjar’s company values, culture and ways of working

  • Must submit to a background check confidentially processed by our third-party

Compensation Range

The budgeted compensation range for this role is €50,000 to €70,000 annually. Ranges are based on market research and are equitable to other roles within Hotjar. The actual compensation offered will be based on relative experience. At this time we are only able to provide official employment status to those located in Malta, and Germany (for candidates who don’t require visa sponsorship). All other team members will join as full-time consultants and will be responsible for paying any taxes or applicable fees where they reside.

    • Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R, Weka, NumPy, MatLab, etc {{depending on specific project requirements}}. Excellence in at least one of these is highly desirable 

    • Great communication skills 

    • Experience with data visualisation tools, such as D3.js, GGplot, etc. 

    • Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL, Hive, Pig {{actual list depends on what you are currently using in your company}} 

    • Experience with NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase {{depending on project needs}} 

    • Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.

    The Role

    We are seeking a senior data scientist to lead us in making optimal, data-driven decisions throughout the company.  You will work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to communicate findings, answer business questions, improve existing processes and innovate new solutions. You will bring a rigorous approach to validating assumptions, generating hypotheses, and the design, analysis, and iteration of experiments. Your will focus on driving and optimizing marketing strategies, but will also be flexible enough to support analytics needs across other areas in the company including product, e-commerce, and customer service as needed.     • Partner with marketing team to design and analyze experiments to optimize pricing, up-sells, ad copy, etc.

    • Apply segmentation and modeling methodology to improve marketing campaigns, email lists, and provide insight into our user base.
