The Carpentries is committed to “training and fostering an active, inclusive, diverse community of learners and instructors who promote and model the importance of software and data in research.” We seek an engaged and collaborative individual who shares this vision for a full-time position as the Curriculum Community Developer for The Carpentries. The Curriculum Community Developer has a broad responsibility for developing community and guidelines around open, collaborative curriculum development within the scientific open source software and research ecosystem.

As the Curriculum Community Developer, you will facilitate the development of new Carpentries-style lessons and promote the submission, sharing, and use of community-developed lessons. You will develop an editorial process for the peer-review of lesson submissions, and create documentation to guide authors in the lesson development process. You will identify and recruit peer reviewers, and coordinate the review process. The Curriculum Community Developer will establish effective communication channels for community members proposing, developing, and reviewing lessons. You will build a community of lesson developers and maintainers as part of a collaborative development ecosystem. You will work with the Lesson Infrastructure Technical Developer to guide development of the CarpentriesLab platform, advocating for curriculum developers and effectively connecting them with the technical infrastructure. You will also be involved in supporting our existing community of maintainers for core Carpentries lessons through effective communication, transparency, and collaborative leadership.

The Carpentries is an open, global community teaching the skills and perspectives to turn data into knowledge. We build capacity in essential data and computational skills for conducting efficient, open, and reproducible research. We believe in a world where more people have the computational skills and perspectives to work with data to address their questions in science, scholarship and society. We aim to build that world by scaling evidence-based teaching, creating inclusive environments, and building communities of practice based on open principles. In this role, you’ll join a diverse team of professionals working to spread data-driven research skills. Our community comprises 50,000 learners, 2,000 instructors, 80 Trainers, and 85 member organisations from research institutions around the world.

About Us

We’re a core team of eleven staff and independent contractors, with a nine person Executive Council. We’re a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)3 Community Initiatives. We have a large community of instructors and contributors, and a much larger community of users. We use evidence-based teaching practices to teach the core skills for effective computational and data work, and we promote reproducible research and open science/open source widely. All interactions in The Carpentries community and spaces, both virtual and in-person, are governed by our Code of Conduct.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a remote position and is initially funded for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal. For US-based candidates, compensation will be $77,000 - $104,500 USD annually, commensurate with experience. Outside the US, total compensation may need to be adjusted in accordance with legal and financial costs associated with international hiring and contracting for a US-based entity.     About the Role

    This role is fully remote.

    In this role you will work primarily with the Front End developers and own, drive, and improve the non-technical aspects of the Front End release cycle. You will also work with the Engineering and Product teams to help build, maintain, and track timelines, and coordinate around objectives. You should be familiar with agile and waterfall planning and comfortable with a combination approach. Overall, we are looking for someone with a methodical, analytical, and flexible approach to release and project management who will coordinate and collaborate within and without the Front End team to alleviate the non-technical burden of shipping well and often.

    What you'll do:

    • Own non-technical aspects of ongoing release process including coordination, documentation, and process improvement
    • Work with the Product Team to break up larger epics and stories into smaller consumable units of development
    • Work with the Product Team, Frontend team, other Engineering Teams, and major stakeholders to coordinate work and follow up on deliverables
    • Identify task blockers in advance
    • Manage project workflows, groom tickets and boards, and look for duplicates, invalid, or undefined tickets to help ensure everything in the queue is ready to be worked on
    • Develop road maps through accurate estimates based on Jira metrics you will collect and analyze
    • Maintain, coordinate, and communicate project timelines
    • Create executive dashboards and reports that would show the status of major projects, resource utilization, gaps and roadmap

    Who you are:

    • Minimum of 10+ years experience working as a project manager or similar role
    • Jira expert with two or more years experience with Kanban project management or light Scrum, and the openness to experiment with process
    • Spreadsheet expert (Google Sheets, Excel) comfortable with pivot tables and statistical analysis
    • Excellent communication skills and eagerness to ask questions and understand business and product objectives
    • The energy and patience to work in a rapidly growing industry, and the ability to recognize and pursue objectives independently
    • Superb organizational skills and an analytical view on maximizing productivity, with a focus on value and not getting caught up on process
    • Resilient determination to push projects through to completion, regardless of how often priorities and deadlines may shift with little notice

    Responsibilities

    Interpersonal Frequency is looking for a Digital Project Manager who can: 

    • Lead website projects in the I.F. business landscape 

    • Be adept at managing a computer savvy team in a 100% virtual setting

    • Manage projects with modern online project management processes and tools

    • Work collaboratively with public sector organizations to ensure customer satisfaction 

    Specific Duties

    The I.F. Digital Project Manager will be encompass the basic responsibilities of managing any project: plan the work and coordinating tasks, assess and mitigate risk, lead teams and keep the project within scope.  Specifically, the PM will manage large website redesign projects through the following phases: 

    • Pre-Sales: Participate in RFP interviews and pre-sales conversations as requested.

    • Discovery & Definition: Conduct project planning, work with Research, Content, and Design teams to begin aligning with the client. 

    • Design & Planning: Coordinate with Content, Design, and the client to define the new website

    • Development & Training: Conduct sprint plannings and track development tasks and client training to execute against the new website design and features.

    • Launch & Post Launch: Bring it all together to launch the new site and immediately support the client through a post-launch bug sprint.

    • Solutions & Support: Work closely with the client and Support and Solutions resources to provide ongoing support and care for the client.

    The digital project manager will also participate in the following:

    • Business Development: Besides managing the team and the project, the I.F. Digital Project Managers will work with clients and understand their needs. This includes building a foundation of trust to safeguard and shepherd the interests of our clients and their users.

    • Account Management: The I.F. Digital Project Managers will help set and adjust the client’s expectations to find the balance between excellent delivery and staying within scope.  The PM will take responsibility for the client's contributions to the project and be proactive in communicating progress, opportunities and risks for the team and project.

    • Quality Assurance: The end result of an I.F. website project should be work so exceptional that our clients recommend us without being asked.  The I.F. Digital Project Manager will work closely with the project team to build quality into every phase of the project using experience and direct communication to do what is best, versus what is merely expedient.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    • Be a US Citizen or already have a Green Card

    • A minimum of six (6) years experience in project management, with at least two (2) years relevant digital experience 

    • Track record of managing multiple large projects at a time and balancing workload and requirements with conflicting priorities; ability to anticipate and adapt to changing conditions and opportunities

    • Experience managing project budgets and scope and notifying/mitigating when the project begin trending higher than expected

    • Experience working directly with clients as the primary point of contact for a project

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to interface effectively with senior managers, business partners and clients, and the discernment to sense of when to strongly advocate for a position and when to seek compromise

    • Experience predicting and monitoring risks for large, complex projects with multiple internal and external stakeholders 

    • Experience working remotely in a virtual office environment

    • Ability to lead virtual teams in a highly collaborative team environment and ability to resolve conflict, while fostering a collaborative and communicative environment

    • Minimum Remote Environment Requirements:

      • Internet Speed: 10 Mbs Download/10 Mbs Upload
